Chappell Roan, the Pink Pony Girl that’s you. You’re a gay icon who doesn’t take any nonsense, a nerd with a Affinity to medieval fantasy like the rest of us, and you also point out that the political systems of the United States, even those that claim to be progressive, Complicity in genocide. They could never make me hate you. “Good luck, baby”
The now-viral clip from Roan’s performance in London on September 21 shows her between songs pointing out someone in the crowd taking photos with what looks like the clamshell game device. In a world where smartphones have professional camera quality, it might seem silly to use a now decade-old Nintendo handheld to take photos at a concert. But I used my PlayStation Vita as my primary photography device for two years and I know the appeal of getting caught up in it. Roan seems to know this too, as she supported the fan on stage.
“Bitch, is that a DS?” Roan asked, then laughed. “You keep taking pictures with your DS, you keep doing that.”
Although Roan calls it DS for short, it’s very likely that the fan was using either a DSi or a 3DS, as the camera didn’t become standard on Nintendo’s handhelds until the DSi in 2008. And if you’re using one of those in 2024, that’s next-level commitment and I applaud you for it. That’s Pink Pony Girl, dammit.
This is the third time I have seen Roan on My city as they thankfully Overlaps with games and nerd culture. Girl, you wanna chat about video games? Gay stuff? Gay video game stuff? I’ll have my people call your people.
