The PC version of Chrono triggerReleased on Steam in 2018, it has just received its first update in four years, and it’s a surprisingly large one, with the highlight being that the 1995 pixel-based JRPG is now properly playable on ultrawide displays.

In keeping with this game, before we get to today’s news, we’re going to go back in time for a minute. If this particular version of Chrono trigger Falling behind for the first time in February 2018, it was a mess. Although it consisted mostly of the recent DS edition of the game, it also had the awful “HD” graphics from the phone version and all sorts of broken little details like menu prompts left over from touchscreen versions.

In Square Enix’s honour, they spent the next few months fixing most of these issues, and by mid-2018, what was left was a good, if not perfect, version of the SNES classic. You’d expect the game to sit there forever, driving sales, so it’s a huge surprise to see a major update fall out of nowhere four years later.

The main thing it adds is 21:9 support, which you can see in this Japanese trailer for the update below:

I don’t know what excites me about it. Ultra widescreen support is pretty common in PC games these days (and mods of older games too) so it’s not the resolution itself. I think it’s just the fact that it’s not the only one Yes, really By and large, it’s official (rather than requiring mods or emulations), which is a nice touch from a major publisher for a release like this.

Along with 21:9 support, there are also “improved d-pad controls”, some UI improvements and an increase in the number of save slots.
