Finally, our long national nightmare is over. After years of waiting and suffering, I can confirm that the next call of Duty Black Ops The game brings back the franchise’s iconic iconography: “The guy with the guns is sitting on the cover.” This is truly a cause for celebration.
A new year naturally also means a new entry in Activision’s long-running and extremely popular first-person shooter series. call of Duty. As revealed last week, The next game is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, a new entry in the franchise’s subseries about spies, future warfare and conspiracy theories. Strangely, this game still appears on last generation consoles. But I am not here to chat about it or BlackOps 6 Launch on Game Pass. Instead, I want to talk about something much more important. Something that was missing from the last two entries. Of course, I am referring to the random guy who is on the cover of many BlackOps
How it all began…
It all started in 2010. That year Treyarch and Activision released the original Call of Duty: Black Opp. BlackOps and its cover introduced something new to the world.
Before this entry, previous call of Duty The cover images showed men standing, fighting, running or screaming. BlackOps did something different. It made its cover star relax. “Hey, relax, dude,” Treyarch told the cover star. “But still stick to your guns… that’s Call of Duty.
And so the Black Ops fRanchise was the first to have guys with guns on the cover, and what a great time it was.
In 2012, Black Ops II continued the tradition of having the guy on the cover not only sit, but also do a little thinking. A gun rested near his chin as he appeared to be pondering a great idea—or maybe he was just thinking about how cool Nuketown is.
Then in 2015, Black Ops III came along and gave the seated soldier with the guns a glowing look and a fancy power armor. It was the future after all. Even if you relax in the future, you have to wear high-tech armor.
You don’t know what you have until it’s gone
In 2018 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launched and while everyone was talking about the game’s Battle Royale mode –blackout– and the lack of a single-player campaign, I instead mourned a greater loss.
This was the first entry in the sub-series that did not have a guy with guns on the cover. Instead, the cover showed what call of Duty I had seen it so many times: guys running and screaming. Boring. Sad. Horrible. It really was the beginning of a dark age.
When Activision launched another new Black Ops game—2020s Cold War—I had hope. Maybe this entry in the BlackOps franchise would make everything right and bring back the guy sitting on the cover with his guns. But as we all learned in 2020, hope is nothing more than a cruel trick the universe plays on those in need.
Cold War, How BlackOps 4There was no guy on the cover sitting there with guns in his hands. Instead, we got a close-up of two guys with their faces split down the middle. I didn’t care. At that point, I had officially given up. BlackOps is tired of allowing its cover stars to relax while carrying firearms.
the return of the King
When rumors arose that the next call of Duty Game would be another BlackOps entry, I felt nothing. The series had moved on. I no longer had hope for a man sitting on the cover with a couple of guns. I had already been burned too many times.
As you can imagine, I was shocked and delighted when the first leaks revealed that BlackOps 6 would show a man on the cover of the game also holding two pistols. Then, on On May 28, the game’s official artwork was revealed and there he was in all his glory: the guy sitting on the cover with guns.
It seems that Activision and Treyarch are righting a wrong they committed in 2018 when BLOPS 4 dropped the sitting guy on the cover and Cold War doubled this tragic turn of events. Finally Call of Duty: Black OpIt’s back, baby. Take a seat, soldier, you deserve some rest.
