There is nothing “normal” about it Lucifer‘s journey as a television series, so it’s no surprise that the last San Diego Comic-Con panel in the series happened to be virtual as part of this year’s Comic-Con @ Home. Moderated by The cool adventures of SabrinaLuke Cook – Netflix Others Lucifer Morningstar – Virtual Saturdays Lucifer The panel discussion featured series star (and executive producer) Tom Ellis and series showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich as they look back on the most recent (second half of) season five of the series and then look forward to the upcoming sixth and final season.
[Ed. note: The following contains spoilers for Lucifer season 5.]
Of course, last season’s musical episode (“Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam”) was a formidable endeavor for both the season and the series as a whole. “Usually when you choose songs [for the show]You think, ‘Oh, we love this, but we probably won’t get it,’ ”Ellis explained. “In the end we got pretty much everything we wanted to do, which was like a dream. We dreamed a dream and got it. ”Ellis then naturally referred to his sensational number with Lucifer’s father, God (Dennis Haysbert), a number that even Modrovich couldn’t get enough of.
“I saw the last song in the musical probably five times. And that’s a lot since I’ve seen it 50 times. So, I loved that last moment between Tom and Dennis. I think it’s just perfect. ”On choosing the songs for this particular episode, Modrovich explained,“ We broke the story first and there were a couple of songs that we knew we wanted to use. We knew we were going to have a crime scene and we knew we wanted to use Queens ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ because it was just perfect. And they kindly allowed us to use it. But everyone else really came out of history. ”She added,“ Dan would feel like he’s going to Hell. And so I literally googled songs, ‘going to Hell’, and found them Squirrel Nut Zippers
With an upcoming final season there was a touch of nostalgia on the panel. While the rest of the cast weren’t there, that didn’t stop Ellis from complimenting them. “We were basically lucky as a group,” said Ellis. “Because when you do these trips with people, you really, really hope that there are people you can get along with. And it’s been a strange journey, this show because it didn’t go seamlessly, and it wasn’t the usual path of a six-season show. So we’ve been through a lot together. Even when we started the show was in LA and then we moved to Vancouver, it was really a shocking moment for all of us because we just had each other. So, having that for the first couple of seasons and then taking it back to LA … It was the foundation of the show’s success I think. Just the fact that we really wanted to work with and for each other. “
However, when the question came up why the show killed Dan (Kevin Alejandro), the showrunners made it very clear. “I’ll say it here and now,” said Modrovich. “Tom’s idea.” Henderson followed up on the joke, stating, “Yes, [laughs] Tom hates Kevin Alejandro, it’s true. ”
Seriously that Lucifer Showrunners confirmed what Alejandro had said in various post-mortem seasons, namely that he advocated killing his character. Of course, it was planned at this point that season 5 would be the last season of the series. Ellis explained that the concept of him playing both Lucifer and Lucifer’s twin, Michael, also sprang from a similar logic. “It was a crazy idea that Joe and Ildy came to me when we were going to do season five. And I thought, ‘It’s the last season. Yes we do it. ‘”
The second half of this season then showed how crazy it really was, with the episode “Family Dinner” – in which the episode of the title family dinner featured many moving pieces, in which both Lucifer and Michael were present – an experience that Ellis called “exhilarating , exhausting and somehow just the craziest kind of work I’ve ever had to do. “
Because season 5 was originally filmed as the last season of Lucifer, it had matured the title character pretty much too – to the point where he defeated Michael to eventually become the new god in the season finale. (According to Ellis, “Michael is now on time off” in season six.) But according to Ellis, it continues: “I think he’s grown up a lot. And he’s still growing up. But I think it’s the classic “be careful what you wish for”. Because he convinced himself of a lot of things in season 5, but when something happens that you think about, it often feels very different. So this is the kind of puzzle that Lucifer finds in Season 6. ”
Henderson added, “Because so much of his story matured and grown up in Season 5 – and at Tom’s point – there is so much to discover when you actually get to the point where you think you’re done. You think you have become the person you tried to be. And that was really interesting to explore. ”
In addition, as Modrovich noted and Lucifans already know: “With Lucifer it is always one step forward, two or three steps back.” Even if he is the new god. Or maybe especially if he’s the new god, since Henderson and Modrovich were pretty closed off about what this new status quo will mean for Lucifer last season. Yes, it was clear that it was Chloe from Lucifer and Lauren German Not involved. “It’s not an official engagement,” Henderson said when Lucifer presented Chloe Lilith’s ring before sacrificing himself in the season finale. “But it’s an emotional one, some might say.”
But when asked if Lucifer will have all the power of God in season 6, Henderson said that the performance would dominate the first parts of the final season. “I think this will be one of the first questions our characters will ask when we start Season 6.” There was less ambiguity in the form of responses to the “DevilCop” aspect of the series. As well as the “AngelCop” part when they confirmed that Amenadiel (DB Woodside) will will join the LAPD in Season 6. When asked if Lucifer will continue solving crimes, Ellis replied, “Oh, I think it’s in his DNA now. There may be the strange to solve. To be honest, he has some puzzles to solve in season 6. ”
During the panel, Netflix dropped a promo for the final season, announced the official premiere date and even gave a sneak peek of new footage at the end. In particular, new footage sent to the Lucifer Pilot when Lucifer was stopped by a police officer. Henderson noted that during season five they thought they had made all the Easter eggs they could – but then they could create even more for season six. Modrovich teased “another familiar face” (besides the cop who pulled Lucifer). over) appear at one point, “from a favorite episode”. (Possibly Lindsey Gort’s Candy Morningstar, who even appears in the above promo?) Once again, Henderson got very vague when he said, “We found a character we had never seen before. We found a character that we had talked about but never seen. “
“This is the last year we have secrets,” explained Henderson. “This is the last year we can surprise people.” Modrovich agreed, adding, “I can’t believe some things didn’t come out. Very exciting.”
Lucifer returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season on Friday, September 10th.
