Critical Role’s Matt Mercer joins the cast of Baldur’s Gate 3 as Minsc

Larian Studios brought out a new update Baldur’s Gate 3 On Wednesday, players of the Early Access RPG can try out a new class: the paladin. While a “Panel from Hell” live stream On Wednesday, Larian also confirmed additional star power for the game, with Critical Role DM and veteran voice actor Matthew Mercer joining the cast.

Mercer, whom gaming fans will recognize from his prominent roles over watch, League of Legends, Fourteen days, death strandingand (of course) the actual Critical Role game series, Minsc will play Baldur’s Gate 3. (Voice actor Jim Cummings played Minsc in previous Baldur’s Gate games.)

Larian and Mercer announced the actor’s involvement – with a taste of his minsc – in a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday.

Elsewhere inside Baldur’s Gate 3 news, patch 9 to the game brings the aforementioned paladin class, the holy warrior archetype, which includes two subclasses (Oath of Devotion and Oath of the Ancients) and a “hidden subclass” called Oathbreaker.

“Paladins who deviate from their sacred vows become oathbreakers, which has its own advantages and disadvantages,” Larian said in a press release. “Embrace your newfound powers for better or for worse, or embark on the path to redemption.”

The Oathbreaker Paladin’s artwork confirms that the hidden underclass has not been attending Sunday mass recently.

Patch 9 also allows players to reach level 5, a significant performance boost for all classes that unlocks new spellcasting abilities including Fireball, Counterspell, and Animate Dead. The update also brings an overhauled reaction system for combat encounters and the ability to, well, fly. With the fly magic, of course.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is targeting an August 2023 release on Windows PCs. The role-playing game has been available in Early Access since October 2020.
