the Crusader Kings series has long supported same-sex relationships in certain forms, but thanks to the way so many games were built around historical ideas of marriage and succession, players had to use mods if they wanted gay characters to be tethered.
This was explained by developers Paradox last year after same-sex concubines were momentarily and accidentally enabled in the vanilla game, a scenario that had the potential to basically… break everything:
Paradox notes that some time ago modders had briefly enabled “same-sex concubinity,” but the developers were quick to restrict it “as part of fixing a bug related to concubines, believing it would never have been possible in the first place.” .
“We have since made changes to properly support same-sex concubinity and it will come alongside other modding improvements,” as part of the game’s series of 1.3 updates. “We also plan to support same-sex marriage for mods in 1.4,” adds Paradox. “Due to the greater technical risks involved, it was not possible to include this in 1.3.X; We need more time to test it to ensure this support doesn’t introduce bugs into the vanilla game.”
That was in April 2021, and while Paradox originally promised same-sex marriage would appear in the 1.4 update, it’s now coming alongside that as part of the 1.5 update royal court DLC, the first major expansion for the 2020 release.
Players can toggle the ability to have same-sex marriages in the main menu before starting a game, and Paradox says they’ve “updated a variety of AI logic, interactions, and content to accommodate this in gameplay.”
“We’re very happy to be able to build this into the game and have support in the game rules for unmodded games, it’s something that many in the team and community have been asking for and we’re happy that it’s finally shipping into 1.5.”
the royal court The DLC is scheduled to release on February 8th, and this update will be released alongside it. And in the other CK3 news, the game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S somehow on March 29th.
