Five years after it was ripped from digital stores, Obsidian’s cult spy RPG classic –Alpha Protocol– is back and better than ever thanks to GOG.com.
Alpha Protocol is a spy role-playing game This allows characters to explore the world while preventing villains from using weapons, hiding, and speaking softly. It was developed by Obsidian and released in 2010 mixed reviews and low sales. At the time, the game was praised for its contemporary setting expanded dialogue options. However, the combat wasn’t fun and numerous glitches made it difficult to fully enjoy this unique spy RPG. And then in 2019The game was removed from Steam due to expiring music licenses. Luckily for people who enjoy this flawed but special RPG, Alpha Protocol is back from the digital graveyard on PC.
At the 20th of March GOG announced that the spy game published by Sega was once again available to purchase and play through its store. As with all other games published by GOG, Alpha Protocol is DRM-free. But what’s even better: This new version includes cloud saves, all original licensed music, full controller support for Dualsense, Dualshock, Xbox and Switch gamepads, and is playable on modern operating systems without the need for modifications or optimizations are. Oh, and achievements from the console versions have also been added to this new PC version.
Sure, Obsidian’s more famous 2010 RPG – which came out about four months later in October – is Fallout: New Vegasprobably the better game and certainly one with more fans in 2024 as Alpha Protocol. But let’s not let this strange game be forgotten.
For $20 (or $18 now for a limited time) and with modern controller and PC support, I think it’s worth giving Obsidian’s less popular spy RPG another try. It’s not often that we get big budget RPGs set in a modern world from a developer with such a great track record. It’s not perfect, it can be a bit annoying at times, and you may encounter some bugs. But hey, you can say the same thing NewVegas, and many people (including me) love this game.
So I say give Alpha Protocol a shot! Be a polite and clever spy. Or just lie, cheat and kill your way to the top. The game allows that too.
