There are games that will sell no matter what. Grand Theft Auto VI could be released in such a broken state it would kill your firstborn, and it would still sell a billion copies on day one. Breath of the Wild 2 might come spiked with anthrax, and people would buy two copies each. So it doesn’t matter which state Pokemon scarlet and violet (PSV) was released, it was guaranteed to be extraordinarily good. That it’s so, very broken is devastating, but it would never significantly affect its inevitable sales. What’s more interesting is how they enjoy it for the majority anyway.
i know i am
Only UK figures are currently availablebut these show PSV to be the second biggest sale Pokemon game of all time, beaten only by the 3DS’s Sun and moon. In fact, it may be far larger since it’s just sales numbers as Nintendo doesn’t release download dates. scarlet and violet could easily achieve the highest opening week numbers for the franchise despite being the most unfinished Pokemon to date.
So why? Well, there are many factors at play here. But I think it comes down to a combination of hype, nostalgia, and the fact that, much as we like to complain, people are willing to play through broken games.

Of the big three consoles on the market today, the Nintendo Switch remains the most accessible and appealing to a wide range of gamers. From casual gamers to more serious gamers, there is something for everyone.
Pokemon It clearly benefits from one of the hardest things to establish in gaming: a formula. (That’s the polite way of calling it formulaic.) Like call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, smash bros, or many other successful franchises, viewers are looking for the gameplay patterns they already know, but perhaps with incremental improvements. People want what’s familiar, even nostalgic, but also with enough innovation that it feels a bit different than the last one. And while many will protest, they want to make big strides and probably cite OTW about previous zelda incarnations, they would also be absolutely furious if Tears of the Kingdom turned out to be completely different from its predecessor.
While PSV may have been promoted as a dramatic shift from sword and Sign– the advent of an open world, with three times as many story paths to explore, and you can even complete the gyms in any order – the reality is, when we watched the trailers it just felt familiar enough to pre-order. You were going to buy it anyway, right? Why not get this bonus item? Look, there are psyducks! The fact that Nintendo limited reviews to the day before release (obviously to sites they felt well behaved enough to be allowed to review) certainly didn’t help, making it very difficult for any outlet to tell readers or viewers how broken this game is.

Of course, we make ourselves big in the gaming press when we imagine that what we say about a game series that’s so mainstream could have a significant impact on sales. No matter that it will only ever be a fraction of the people who will change their mind Not Buy a game after seeing negative reviews. As these early sales numbers show, the widespread coverage of the game’s serious problems has done absolutely nothing to diminish its popularity.
Well, that’s pre-sale excitement, but what about after people start playing? Well, again, niche groups run the risk of believing themselves to be much more representative of the general population than they really are, and in this case it is the publicly outraged who are deluding themselves.
Yesterday, I wrote about how much fun I had playing Pokemon scarlet in coop. Knowing how one my city The commenter would respond immediately, I heavily disclaimed the article that it was definitely not published in good enough condition. I said it because I believe it — it’s not ok for a publisher the size of Nintendo to release a $60 AAA game knowing it’s playing like a beta build. They knew what state it was in, but they also knew a Pokemon The release date cannot be missed due to the ridiculous number of dominoes that would fall across a multi-billion dollar franchise. And people reading a specialized gaming site like this are absolutely right to be upset about it. It’s just that they also tend to think that they are in the majority and that their righteousness is representative. So much so that while I’ve tripped over myself to acknowledge it, the commenters still felt the need to indignantly inform me that the game is unacceptably broken and that this moral corruption is ensuring the game’s downfall.
Still, I bet my butt they’re still playing. I bet they’re angry but still want their Koraidon to be able to scale walls, so they’ll just have that one other Titan fight. Yes, There are some looking for refundsbut the real majority carries on despite everything, just without getting angry about it.
It also seems very likely that the amount of attention drawn to the game is due to its increasingly amusing bugs and glitches might also help. Sure, you’re watching a clip of someone falling through the floor, but you’re also reminded that this is new Pokemon game exists. And apart from where the guy fell through the floor, it’s bright and colorful and full of pretty, cute creatures!
But perhaps more than anything, you are the truth can play the game. It automatically saves continuously, and while absolutely unforgivable, hard crashes are the game’s rarest problems. I’ve run into so many silly problems with the game but the honest answer I mostly have is show it to my son so we can laugh at how silly it looks or he can show me. And then we go ahead and have fun with the game.
I’m way more angry at how the game is wasting Poké Balls by refusing to catch lower level creatures with a fraction of health remaining than I am, because every time I stand on a slope the game shows me its Underwear. My patience is tested every time the game tells me a Pokemon is asleep, and tells me again that the Pokemon is asleep for no reason, and then immediately tells me that the Pokemon hasn’t done anything because it’s asleep, before I can take another damn turn. It’s nowhere near tested for my Koraidon to disappear, so it looks like I’m floating off the ground.
As a game critic, I’m amazed Pokemon scarlet and violet‘s choppy release and will happily warn people about it until it’s patched to the skies. As an enthusiast, I play it in tiny slots, trying to fill up my Pokédex, buying new hats, and over the moon as my team of Pokémon evolves. It’s definitely not good enough, both in terms of its technical awfulness and its lack of ambition beyond larger bounds. If I were to write a review, it would be one of these annoying ones, where I go into great detail about everything I think Game Freak should have done better, and then add that I really enjoy playing it.
That Pokemon Games have a catch, and it’s a good one. There’s a reason it’s one of the most successful game franchises in the world, surviving in its core game loop for over 25 years and continuing to do so despite complaints from a vocal minority with each new release. That minority is very likely right, but the series’ success shows that being right doesn’t mean much in the face of this juggernaut. And, you know, a juggernaut that you bought and still play.
