Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game in the trilogy of games that reimagine the groundbreaking 1997 role-playing game, and it spends much of its running time developing storylines that it will presumably conclude in the third installment. Some of these are world-building details, such as establishing the nation of Wutai as a major player in the upcoming political conflicts. But there is also a lot of work being done on the characters in addition to all the mini-games and exploring the open world. protagonist Cloud Strife has a remarkable character arc throughout Final Fantasy VII history and during Rebirthas a middle chapter, doesn’t quite reveal what happens next for him, fans have spotted a small detail in two scenes in Nibelheim that could possibly be an oversight, but also a pretty great, subtle foreshadowing. Spoilers for everyone Final Fantasy VII
During the opening hours of RebirthCloud tells party members Tifa, Aerith, Barret and Red Final Fantasy VII. After telling the group what he remembers from that day, Tifa confides in Aerith that her memory of being there as these events unfolded differs greatly from the way Cloud tells the story. Cloud issues parts Rebirth He struggles with his conflicting memories and eventually learns that Sephiroth has some control over him. But what exactly is going on with him is never fully explained. This revelation is likely expected in the third game, but it turns out that Cloud’s memories of the Nibelheim incident overlap with those of Zack Fair, the protagonist of Crisis core who dies in the original Final Fantasy VII Timeline.
It turns out that Cloud was not a SOLDIER during the incident and did not have his legendary Buster Sword at the time. Therefore, fans have noticed a difference in his behavior Rebirth
Twitter user pwtizza I posted a comparison between two scenes in which Cloud sits at the water tower in the center of Nibelheim. This is a place where he and Tifa met as children, and this place still has some significance to him today. When he sits on the pole in the flashback, he is carrying the giant Buster Sword on his back, as always. Many video games feature characters sitting down with weapons strapped to their backs and simply letting them zip around the environment. What of it? Well, the fact that Square Enix created an entirely new animation of Cloud removing the sword from his back as he sits down in the same spot later in the game makes this difference potentially significant. Maybe Cloud doesn’t take the sword off his back in the flashback because he didn’t actually have it at the time.
In the actual timeline of events, Cloud would not receive the Buster Sword until much later, after Zack’s death. So it makes sense that he would move through the world without storing a giant blade on his back. The fact that there are scenes in most video games where the animations for weapons aren’t adjusted makes it entirely possible that this is just an oversight, but damn, it would really be great if Square went ahead with this subtle change would think ahead.
