It’s been five years since the last one Gearbox games and during Gears of War: E-Day was announced at Microsoft’s last major Xbox ShowcaseThere’s no word on if or when The Coalition will continue work on the story left behind Gears 5. The game’s executive producer Rod Ferguson recently shared what his plan was for the sequel at the time, and it’s not at all what I expected.
One of the final stages of exploring the open world of Gears 5 turns around Exploring an old UIR space program to restart a Hammer of Dawn to combat the resurgent Locust. It’s one of the most beautiful sections of the game, complete with impressive sandstorms, striking industrial ruins, and Mars-like red sand landscapes. Ferguson said on latest episode of IGN‘s podcast unlocked that this was the coalition that put its intentions into action Gears 6.
“I’ve only just set us apart at the highest level [the planet of Sera]he said of the early planning documents for the sequel. “So Gears 6 was to leave Sera, and that was something we were working towards. If you look at history, if you pay attention to history gears 5, They kind of come across UIR rocket technology and things like that, which we laid the groundwork for when we took over this UIR territory, we kind of inherited their space program as well. So what I wanted to do with it Gears 6 was to get you away from Sera and figure out what that might mean for the rest of the galaxy, or at least the rest of the solar system.”
Ferguson, who shortly afterwards left the coalition in 2020 Gears 5 started and is currently the leader Diablo IV at Blizzard said that space exploration would have been less attractive Mass effect than the Sputnik era of the 1950s space race. Presumably travel would be slow, expensive and strategic. It would also undoubtedly have introduced new alien enemy types, potentially introducing some interesting sci-fi mysteries about the origins of human and locust life on Sera.
The industry veteran suggested that these ideas, which sounded like nothing more than a pitch document at the time, were scrapped while The Coalition instead revisited Gears’ past with a prequel centered around Emergence Day, the franchise’s take on the Invasion of Normandy Millions of locusts emerged from holes in the ground to attack humanity, eventually leading to the use of weapons of mass destruction that ultimately crippled the surface-dwelling nations of Sera.
Gears 5 also ended with a cliffhanger involving the decision of which main character to save, seemingly confusing the consequences Gears 6. It sounded like the plan was to make the most popular choice among players canonical. However, as the franchise develops, it could be years before fans can see this in a game.
