Big changes are taking place Disney World in Florida. The company has announced it will close a popular Muppets attraction to make room for a new one Monsters, Inc.-Themed area and ride. And there was bad news for Aerosmith fans too.
On November 22nd, Disney confirmed the online rumors and announced this plans to officially close Muppet Courtyard and the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction, both located in the same area of Hollywood Studios at Disney World Orlando. Muppet*Vision3D has been around since 1991.
“That's right, people will be able to enter the world of Monsters, Inc. when it is added to the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios,” Disney announced.
The new Monsters, Inc. The area – inspired by the Pixar animated series that launched in 2001 – will feature a new roller coaster designed to recreate the famous closet door vault scene from the original film. The Monsters, Inc. The area will also include new dining and shopping options, as well as an “all-new theater show.”
In the blog post announcing the newsDisney confirmed that it was having “creative conversations” about how to “preserve this.” [Muppet*Vision 3D] Movie” and other parts of the show so that fans can “enjoy” everything in the future.
“To make room for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will move directly to Sunset Boulevard,” Disney said.
What this actually means is that the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, which opened at Hollywood Studios in 1999, will be re-themed as a Muppets ride featuring various characters from the franchise. Goodbye, Aerosmith, the band the ride has been associated with since it opened. Apparently Disney is also planning to team up the “biggest stars in music” with the Muppets, but didn't share any details about what that will entail.
As with any change to a Disney park, there was a mix of excitement from some online and a lot of complaints. Many older fans are not happy about Disney removing more of the park's story and replacing it with more rides and areas that tie in with the film. In August 2024Disney announced plans to remove the Rivers of America and replace it with a new one Cars-inspired area and ride.
The Muppet*Vision 3D attraction and show isn't closing immediately and Disney says people will have time to enjoy it one last time. Disney has not yet announced specific dates for when it will close and when to expect the new one Monsters, Inc. to open area.
