Nintendo finally unveiled the Switch 2 yesterday, giving us a bit of information and plenty of new reason to speculate, but the only game we saw was the next Mario Kart. Fans are already calling the kart racer Mario Kart 9 although we don't have an official title yet. Even though we only saw a few seconds of the game, it's the fans comb through every frame and speculate about things like the ability to support up to 24 players or perhaps have an exploration mode. But one thing that people are hyper fixated on is the updated character designs. Donkey Kong in particular is one of the larger deviations that has significantly changed the appearance of the gorilla for decades.
Donkey Kong has undergone a few redesigns since its debut in the 1981 original Donkey Kong Arcade game in which the character nicknamed “Donkey Kong” was given the design in 1994 that most people know today – the one with the muscular build and the jaunty red tie Donkey Kong Country. (Well, the draw actually first appeared a few months earlier, in the outstanding 1994 Game Boy game Donkey Kong '94But Donkey Kong Country popularized his new look. Oh, and this character is actually the grandson of the original Donkey Kong. now known as Cranky Kong in most modern ones Donkey Kong And Mario games. Did you get all that?) Donkey Kong has looked pretty much the same since Rare's release Donkey Kong Country in 1994, but it looks like this Mario Kart 9 could be a turning point for the character as it now resembles his Super Mario Bros. Movie iteration as well as a nod to 2D illustrations by Nintendo artist Shigehisa Nakaue and Shigeru Miyamoto's original design.
Hopefully people will get used to the new look when the new one arrives Mario Kart starts. At the moment, it's the only game we know of that's coming to Switch 2, and we're considering it Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is that Switch's best-selling gameIt makes sense for Nintendo to take the lead with a heavy hitter. We'll find out more about this and the new console when Nintendo holds a special announcement Direct presentation on April 2nd.
