Sony Interactive Entertainment is reducing download speed from their PlayStation Network to try to help maintain access to the entire online community while people are making their own and hoping to access the internet more in daily life. SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan announced the deal PlayStation Blog on Tuesday, saying it was working with Internet service providers in the United States and Europe, in an effort to "ensure Internet stability" during coronavirus violence.
"We believe it is important to do our part to address issues of Internet stability as an unprecedented population is active in social networking and relies heavily on internet access," Ryan said. His statement revealed that the bandwidth used for multiplayer and other media would not be affected.
“Players may experience slow download or delay of games but still enjoy solid gameplay. We are grateful for the support and understanding from our community, and for their participation, as we take these steps in an effort to maintain universal access. "
Tony's departure follows similar efforts from similar broadcast providers Netflix, YouTube, Disney Plus, Amazon, and Apple reducing video quality in an effort to reduce complexity in European Internet infrastructure.
Update (March 27): On Friday, Sony announced that it plans to reduce download speeds for PlayStation Network users in the United States and Europe. This story has been updated to reflect change. Here's Tony's statement:
Starting today, we will take similar steps in the United States, and will continue to take appropriate steps to do our part to help ensure Internet stability as this unprecedented situation continues to emerge. Thanks for the role we play in helping to bring a sense of community and entertainment to these difficult times. Thanks again for your support, your patience, and being a part of the PlayStation community. Please stay home and stay safe.
