Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm co-founded Midnight Society in 2021 to develop the kind of online shooters he made famous on Twitch. Now the game studio is moving on without him after new allegations about why the streamer was banned from Amazon’s own platform back in 2020.
“In order to uphold our principles and standards as a studio and individuals, we had to act,” the studio said wrote in a statement“For this reason, we are immediately terminating our business relationship with Guy Beahm. These facts are hard to hear and even harder to accept, but it is our duty to act with dignity on behalf of everyone involved, especially the 55 developers and families we employed, as well as our community of players.”
Midnight Society breaks ties with Beahm just days after former Twitch employee Cody Conners claims The platform originally banned the popular PUBG And call of Duty streamer for allegedly engaging in “sexting with a minor” and attempting to arrange a meeting at TwitchCon through the platform’s “Whispers” messaging system. Beahm responded over the weekend: Write“I did nothing wrong, everything was investigated and cleared up, nothing illegal, no wrongdoing was found and I was paid.”
According to Midnight Society’s new statement, studio management first became aware of the allegations on June 21, shortly after Conner’s tweets went viral on Twitter, and began its own investigation into the situation. “We assumed he was innocent and began speaking with those involved,” the company wrote.
Midnight Society is currently filming Deaddrop functiona community-based PVP extraction shooter for which players can purchase Tower Keys to gain access to vertical pre-alpha parts of the game during development. Previously involved with NFTs in 2022 When Dr. Disrespect and others started promoting it, the project has since moved towards a traditional crowdfunding model where players essentially pay to test the game and participate in its production. Deaddrop function is currently aiming for an early access version about consoles and the Epic Games Store.
The studio did not provide any information about how its investigation was conducted or what findings led it to cut ties with Beahm, whose “Dr Disrespect” brand and large following apparently played a large part in Deaddrop function‘s development. Beahm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
