Dragon Ball voice actors accused of sexual assault may pay more

In 2019, embattled anime voice actor Vic Mignogna, accused of sexual harassment by multiple parties, filed a defamation lawsuit against former employer Funimation and several other voice actors. The court ruled against him in October of the same year and ordered him to appeal. Not only did he lose his appeal on all counts yesterday, but he may have to pay additional attorneys’ fees to the defendants in his lawsuit.

The Texas Second Circuit Court of Appeals found that Mignogna had not produced sufficient evidence to prove that some of the statements made against him were false or malicious. According to the court decision, Mignogna will not only be responsible for paying fees related to his appeal, but will also likely have to pay more legal fees to voice actress Monica Rial and her fiancéit is RonaldToy. The court sent Mignogna’s lawsuit back to the lower court

paying a higher, more reasonable attorney’s fee for him, in part because legal representation costs for Rial and Toye exceeded the ~$125,000 the previous court ruling previously awarded the couple.

In addition to dubbing Edward Elric Fullmetal AlchemistMignogna was a well-known voice actor behind the English dubbing of Broly in Dragon Ball Z

and Junpei in person 3. When Dragon Ball Super: Broly made the rounds in its US theatrical release in 2019, stories of several fans who had met Mignogna over the years began circulating sexual harassment and other inappropriate interactions.

Other voice actors chimed in with their own stories. in one Twitter post, DBZ confirmed voice actress Monica Rial Allegations from other voice actors

against Mignogna, which described similar inappropriate interactions with him.

Mignogna denied the claims made against him in a lengthy Twitter post in January 2019 before filing a defamation lawsuit against Funimation, Rial, Toye and voice actress Jamie Marchi in April. Later that year, Texas District Judge John Chupp dismissed Mignogna’s 17 lawsuits of defamation, whereupon Mignogna appealed a few weeks later. He has now also lost the appeal and the court can increase the amount he has to pay to Rial and Toye.
