Dragon’s Dogma 2the sequel to Capcom’s Cult role-playing game 2012is out now and critics are raving about the game’s expansive world and intricate systems. But some fans who bought the game aren’t too happy and so on steamIt is currently rated “Mixed” in user reviews. The reason for many of the rather negative reactions to the game lies in its Microtransactions.
There are 21 pieces of DLC for the game, which are considered microtransactions and give players access to items like life-restoring Wakestones, currency in the form of Rift Crystals, and even the ability to edit your character’s appearance. Prices for each microtransaction range from $0.99 to $4.99. “A $70 game is something I could support to ensure fair pay for a good game, but if you also add bloatware, ‘buy more crystals’ and yay to win gifts to a single player game…” someone writes Steam reviewer“I cannot in good faith support that.”
The biggest complaints from those who bought the game relate to the existence of these microtransactions in a full-price single-player game, to the idea that this is a game pay to win Tactics and that important customization features are locked behind a paywall. Published by Capcom an answer addressed these concerns and other criticisms on Steam on March 22nd. The post addresses concerns about crashes and bugs, but a large section is dedicated to paid DLC. Capcom reminds players that most items that can be purchased as microtransactions are also available in-game. (Some players are too spread this message on social media.)
The availability of these items in the game has not changed the minds of many as people point out that the resources in the game are limited. But here we have to talk about the nature of the game Dragon’s Dogma 2 Is. It’s a game full of design decisions designed to create friction and prevent the experience of existing in its world from becoming too easy or comfortable.
The misconception is that people think this is how microtransaction purchases are encouraged. Rather, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is designed to distribute the limited resources in the game evenly and sensibly. Limitations on resources like portkeys require you to use them sparingly and think carefully about how you proceed travel around the world. While microtransactions are always questionable and DRagon’s Dogma 2While the microtransactions allow for a slightly quicker path through the game, they are also pretty easy to ignore. This is not a pay-to-win scenario where these microtransactions are necessary. In fact, it’s better to leave them alone and play out the intended experience.
