Electronic Arts has quietly started shutting down the online servers for a few old games. SSome of them are absolute classics, some of which one would have forgotten.
First discovered by true successescontains the list favorites like mirror edge, 2010s NBA jam reboot, and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (the Tim Curry “The only place not corrupted by capitalism” one).
Shutting down the servers has some implications. First, it will obviously shut down the multiplayer servers for any game that supports this feature, although games like Red alert 3 who still have an active community already have fan-supported workarounds for it.
Second, it prevents you from getting achievements that have an online component; NBA jam has a few that require you to play online so they get banned forever once the servers go down.
Third, and most desperately, that’s what I realized as I went through this list mirror edge and Red alert 3 are now 14 years oldthat the mercenary Games were great and are unfortunately missed, and the 2010’s NBA jam reboot is almost as old for us now as it was for the original NBA jam.
