We may not get one Mother 4 sometime soon (well, officially at least), but series creator Shigesato Itoi is still busy selling merchandise about the Hobonichi mother project. Since this is one of the most absurd franchises in the game industry, the latest product launch is of course a little extra.
The short ad for the project’s new Casio G-Shock watch sees professional choreographers Kasumi Sakurai and Sakurako Horikoshi
In mother, this is the moment when party member Ana confesses her love for Ninten, the protagonist, after a grueling mountain hike. The player then has the choice of reciprocating his feelings (the right choice) or rejecting them (the providence of monsters and fools). This is what it looked like on the Famicom in 1989.
As you can see, Sakurai and Horikoshi added some artistic flourishes to a fairly simple dance number due to the console’s limitations, but I think their extra steps add a lot more depth to the performance. The pixelated furniture and the globe also make for a nice touch.
The watch itself is based on a Casio from 2012 and has small accents like that mother the iconic logo and the series “SMAAAASH !!
Other items that were previously produced through Itoi’s collaboration with Hobinichi contain complete scripts for all three games in the mother Series, two Collections of tribute works by well-known manga artists and various bells and whistles such as towels, calendar, and a adorable Mr. Saturn plush toy. I think it’s the next best thing to a new game. And, hey, at least Itoi gets paid.
