As mentioned, Ghost Ashes is a summon that you can invoke, but only at very specific moments in combat. On Twitter, King Bore Haha, a modder working on one Dark Souls called overhaul shadow of darkness, tweeted a clip of himself apparently summoning a ghost jellyfish, one of the earliest ghost ashes found in Stormhill. Except that what appeared wasn’t a jellyfish, but something far more terrifying: one of those terrifying, thresher-like chariots that one-shot you in dungeons. And it certainly hits the knights he directs it at.
“This ghost ash is insanely broken,” King Bore wrote alongside the video. “I have no idea what [FromSoft] thought.”
The modder later returned to the crime scene with an even more ridiculous summons: a walking mausoleum. The gigantic four-legged fortress’ leap is a huge area-of-effect attack, so King Bore took inevitable damage. Still, he fared far better than his permanently crushed enemies.
It’s worth remembering that these Ghost Ashes aren’t real, so don’t bother searching The Lands Between for them. It’s just a modder having fun.
King Bore tells igamesnews that the chariot and mausoleum summons were “proofs of concept” for other ideas he’s working on, and that it’s actually not hard to implement a mod, like swapping spirit ashes. It is difficult to find out exactly which data needs to be changed and where.
“The Spirit Ash System (referred to internally as the very cute ‘Buddy’ [System]’) was implemented in parameters, which are essentially a set of spreadsheets containing game data,” King Bore said. “FromSoft uses Microsoft Excel to implement this data. I swear to god it’s true. Anyway, parameters are a great system for modding, they are extremely accessible and easy to change thanks to the hard work of the toolmakers and format guys who are all smarter and cooler than me. With their hard work already done, all I have to do is figure out how these systems work and change values to do what I want.”
