Just yesterday, developer FromSoftware newly rolled out Elder Ring To update which introduced ray tracing (RTX). It’s been a highly requested feature since the game launched on February 25, 2022. Unfortunately, just hours after the patch 1.09 release, RTX is breaking the popular Soulslike in everything from game crashing to frame rate tanking, and people aren’t too happy about it.

RTX is a technique that renders more realistic lighting. It also smooths reflections, shadows, and textures to provide a more realistic representation of how real light interacts with digital objects. If you have played Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart or Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5, not to mention a bunch of relatively new games on PC, then you have a good idea of how RTX performs on modern hardware. It can seem negligible at times, especially if you’re blind like me, but for those who can point it out, RTX produces some stunning images in terms of reflections and shadows that can make environments seem more immersive and believable. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for example, had more depth with its December 2022 RTX update and felt more moody with the feature enabled, as shadows were darker and denser while light reflected off objects with much more accuracy. It looked good. Elder Ring also looks good the way it is, but any update aimed at making the pretty game prettier is welcome. Unfortunately, beauty is pain as players across the web have reported numerous issues when RTX was on.
Ray Tracing breaks up the Lands Between
RTX is enabled by default following the release of patch 1.09, although it’s only available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. To turn it off, you need to navigate to Game Options (on console) or Graphics (on PC). in the settings menu and then change your settings from there. However, playing the game with the feature enabled appears to cause a variety of issues on all platforms. From Reddit to Twitter, gamers have posted about the issues they encountered.
“LOL, so they added ray tracing Elder Ring and enable it by default with the highest setting,” the Twitter user said EmKUltra64. “If you have an Nvidia RTX or AMD RX 6000 GPU (or newer) and load the game today and notice that the performance suddenly drops, maybe go into the settings and turn it off. It is not worth.”
“New RTX update for Elder Ring is not that good for the performance it needs, minimal change without significant improvement in the look and feel of the game,” wrote another tweeter named CowHourr.

“The ray tracing implementation is very poor,” said one Twitter user VG_Shrine. “It destroys game performance even on an RTX 4090, causing severe stuttering and letting the game run at 40 fps. I hope FromSoftware can fix ray tracing in a future patch.”
It seems worse Elder Ring‘s subreddit. There’s also an abundance of posts from people complaining about how RTX is crash your game or cause it to “rock solid 5fps” on Xbox Series X. Yes, that’s a whoop.
“The game just feels awful with it, at least on console,” said redditor 17sbaucum. “I felt like I was actually lagging behind [the] Game. What was the point of adding ray tracing to the game? It makes the game worse to play and makes no difference to how the game actually looks. I can’t tell you what changed when I turned on ray tracing.”
“The game is not playable with ray tracing enabled,” said another Redditor named Cooper-da-trooper. “Frame drops and hard crashes even on a top-end PC (3090). The game now crashes when I try to load one of my characters from Stormveil, this update is…really bad.”
“I just updated the game and booted it up,” said redditor korrod1il. “I disabled ray tracing because I absolutely hate how it’s implemented in the game and there is no DLSS so it’s poorly optimized and makes me lose almost 15 frames [Leyndell, Royal Capital]. My character is at the Morgott Campfire right after I kill him and I absolutely cannot fast travel overall. When I do, the game [crashes to desktop]. Tried to repair the game, didn’t work. Thoughts?”

My thoughts? Well, it seems that ray tracing is broken. That’s not to say the feature is bad. Apart from Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart, Spider-Man: Miles MoralesAnd The Witcher 3: Wild Huntother examples of games with good RTX are control, Cyberpunk 2077 (shocking, I know) Ghostwire: Tokyo, Red Dead Redemption 2, and many, many others. It just seems so Elder RingThe implementation of is poorly optimized, but that doesn’t mean it always will be. give him some time Things will likely improve. Or you could just play with the RTX off. It is not so Elder Ring really needs it anyways as The Lands Between is already a beautiful if scary place.
