Everyone was shocked when they found out just accept a hug elden ring could actually harm you without much fanfare, but turns out that’s not the only negative thing that can happen when dealing with anything Deathbed Companions-related. In perhaps the funniest adaptation in Tuesday’s big patch 1.06there are two bullet points relating to the clothes worn by everyone’s favorite gothic wife, Fia.
I don’t know how many people this actually affected in practice, but if you’ve ever walked around in your deathbed dress elden ring, you, my friend, played hard mode. Previously, wearing the dark clothing made enemies notice you more easily, even if you were crouched What’s worse, if you happened to perform an attack attack while wearing the Deathbed Gown, allied characters would take damage somehow. Uh what? And mind you, part of the item description for the dress promises, “The touch of the fabric is supremely soft, so as not to hurt even the most desiccated corpse, while still sharing its warmth.”
Well that’s fixed now. But the earlier bug is fun to look at both in the fandom itself and in the game’s larger lore. Fia, one of the characters you meet in Roundtable Hold, is a deathbed attendant who “lies” with dead guys. She would basically collect life energy from champions and then funnel all that healthy power into the deceased so they can catch their breath again. You later learn, spoilers, that Fia intends to use this ability to revive none other than Godfrey himself, the first demigod to die in the world of elden ring.
You don’t know all of this at first. Fia just offers you hugs and you probably say yes because it’s a hug and FromSoftware games are nasty things where you get punished for literally going up to a butterfly on a cliff. Except Fia will use her powers on you while doing so, which in practice means your max HP will go down in exchange for better stance. While some saw this as a great betrayal, others took advantage of Fias powers before embarking on tough fights that could benefit from a slightly stronger constitution.
So it’s almost fitting that the actual uniform worn by the likes of Fia is kind of a mess you too up. I mean, those who live in death aren’t really natural, are they? Plus, with how much thirst is thrown around when it comes to Fia, it kind of makes sense that enemies would have a sixth sense for the sex witches roaming around. The description of the dress reads, “Extremely thin and sheer white dress worn by the deathbed companion as she embraces the dead.” Remember how Dataminer found literal underwear tied to Fia that despite being cut from the actual game still had lovingly rendered lace and little ruffles? Yes.
You can find the deathbed gown in a church in Leydell. Remarkably, the dress is a different item than the robe that Fia left behind at the end of her quest. However, the Deathbed Dress is literally what Fia wears throughout the game.
