Fallout 4‘S free next generation upgrade for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC comes almost a decade after the original release of the post-apocalyptic sequel. Thanks to the massive popularity of the recent Amazon TV adaptation, fans are ready to return to the wasteland. Unfortunately, those who have the game in their library via PlayStation Plus are finding that the upgrade won’t be free for them after all.
If you purchased the disc or digital version of Fallout 4 For PS4, downloading the next-gen update, which includes a 60fps mode and tons of other improvements, is as easy as going to the PlayStation Store page and selecting the free upgrade option. But players who added the game to their library via a paid PS Plus subscription are now finding they have to pay $20 to purchase the entire game again.
While Fallout 4 is currently included as a “free” game in the PS Plus Extra library, it was also part of the PS Plus Collection, which every subscriber had access to when purchasing a PS5 shortly after release. This version of the game is also not eligible for the free upgrade. Players are particularly upset because this wrinkle hasn’t been widely publicized before, even though the paid version of Fallout 4 was on sale for just $5 just yesterday.
“I’m confused,” tweeted Videotechuk, Rockstar Games content creator. “I already own it Fallout 4, which was available for free on PS Plus years ago. But the new version is not granted? It’s about paying.” Another popular account, ThatGuyNamedTre, tweeted“I don’t think Fallout 4, which is claimed by PS+, can be updated to the PS5 version 🙁 damn it!!”
Other players responded by noting that this isn’t an issue on Xbox Game Pass, where most people also own the game through a subscription rather than actually paying for it upfront. PS Plus players are also flooding Bethesda Games’ Discord server with complaints about being unable to redeem the PS5 version. “We are checking the PS Plus update,” wrote one of the administrators. “Keep doing.”
This isn’t the first time this issue has occurred in the era of free PS5 upgrades for PS Plus subscribers. There was a problem with Final Fantasy VII Remake as well as. While the PS4 version of the game was free for paying members, they were not eligible for the paid upgrade to the PS5 version.
That’s on top of that other licensing issues Players have experienced this over the years. It is not uncommon for PS Plus subscribers to have their original license for a game they purchased replaced with a license that expires when their membership expires. PS5 has a complicated system for “Restoration of licenses“When players are excluded from their games in this way, it is still painful.”
Sony and Bethesda did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Update 4:22 p.m. ET, 04/25/2024: Bethesda Game Studios addressed the issue on social media today. “We have identified some confusion regarding the free Fallout 4 next-gen update for PlayStation Plus Extra members,” the studio said tweeted. “The Fallout 4 next-gen update will be available to PlayStation Plus Extra members via the PlayStation Game Catalog.”
It’s still not entirely clear whether the update will be free for all players on PS5 or just those with PlayStation Plus Extra. Some players have bought the full version of the game anyway, while others are trying to resist the growing feeling of FOMO and wait until the situation is resolved.
