The source code for Ubisoft’s 2004 open-world first-person shooter Far cry leaked online. Since source codes for video games seem to lick all the time. Tell me who could have seen this leak coming?
Prominent dataminer Vinícius Medeiros known for her Duke Nukem modificationstweeted this on June 30 Far cryThe source code, the basic instructions for how the game works, was uploaded to the Internet Archive late last month.
“Out of nowhere the complete source code for Far cry 1 just ended up in the internet archive,” Medeiros said. In response to someone they said the code compiledwhich means that the code written is translated into machine code so that a computer can execute it (if it’s written correctly, of course).. And although Assets are not includedHaving access to the game’s source code means people can do this make changes and corrections to things like enemy AI Far cry‘s engine.
The game’s source code was released to the Internet Archive on June 24 by a user named Llaetha.ro. The Internet Archive is a digital library that gives you free access to tons of content of books, films, music, software and other cultural artifacts. The upload includes six files, all marked “Far Cry 1.34 Complete,” suggesting it may be the 34th patch for the decades-old sandbox shooter. While Medeiros said it is being compiled, some commenters at the Internet Archive clarified that they encountered some problems while working with the source code.
“On my educated guess, this is a source tree leak for the PC version of the game to add support for the Ubisoft Game Launcher/DRM,” said user MobCat. “It does contain some EXE files, but no Xbox code or game content. The code there does not compile without a 332 error. (I might also have set up the development environment incorrectly.) So I think that if you put in the effort and learn the codebase, you could get a debug PC version of this game to work.”
The source code did it too the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, a popular Reddit forum for gaming gossip. People cheered the upload and imagined all the possibilities with the OG Far cry.
“Someone will probably raytrace it xD” called redditor epd666.
“Maybe someone can fix the hacking AI lmao,” Redditor BaldingThor hoped.
“If possible someone uses this to mod/remake 1-3 a year Far cry 6 Engine please, and show Ubisoft that it would be worth releasing a 1-3 remaster/remake and how cool it would look if done right.” begged
“I can’t wait for someone to port [this] on any console like Wii U, PSVita, 3DS or even Zeebo demise, Super Mario 64and OpenLara”, called Redditor Moonie Sarito.
my city has reached out to Medeiros and Ubisoft for comment.
Far cry is not the first game whose source code has appeared online. Mortal Kombat II‘S Code was available earlier this year to publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment took it offline. League of Legends‘ code leaked this year too, with Riot Games refusing to pay the extortionist who threatened to upload it. There are also half-life 2 And The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeSource codes, both of which were leaked years ago. While leaks are a shame, it’s a boon for wildlife protection, as it allows people smart enough to tinker with the code to bring old games into the modern era. And that’s cool shit.
