Epic role-playing game Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has fought a lot. How a lot. Of course, you’ll want to increase your damage and use buffs and debuffs to get through these fights, but healing materia is one of the most important orbs you can grab and incorporate into your weapon or armor.

I have gathered pick up all the materia (Be jealous, Yuffie) This is what will heal you, revive you, cure status ailments, and generally keep you in battle longer in this guide. And when you’re ready to take on Hard Mode, you’re no longer allowed to use items. This means there are no X potions or crap giga potions. Including recovery materials in builds is mandatory for every hard mode run.
Some of these Materia are green Magic Materia, while others are purple Complete or yellow Command Materia. If you’re unsure about the differences, check out the general Materia guide for some basics. Otherwise, you can find all the materia to keep your HP up here! (Yes, including HP Up!).
Healing material
With Healing Materia you can cast Heal at the start, then Cura, Regen* and finally Curaga as you earn more AP. Characters with a high magic score heal the most when cast. You can find healing materia in the following locations (in addition to Cloud having an orb equipped at the start of the game):
- Most material and item vendors
- Reward for “Grassland Region Information: Level 1” in Chadley’s Battle Simulator
- The Gold Saucer Cast Break Room
- The Hall of Distraction in the Cave of Gi, rewarded for dropping the Faded Materia off Bugenhagen
- Reward for an A rank in six piano mini-games
*Rain causes you to regenerate HP. Fun fact: It also neutralizes poison. You won’t get the regeneration status effect if you cast it on someone with poison, but it’s an easy fix if you don’t use items or don’t have purification materia equipped.
Resuscitation material
You can use resurrection materials to revive your dead comrades in battle. It starts with Enhance as the first spell, which revives and restores a decent amount of HP. After earning 5,000 AP, you can cast Arise, which will revive a character for full hit points. You can find Revive Materia in the following locations:
- Sold by most Chapter 9 item and material vendors
- Reward for “Nibel Region Intel: Level 2” in Chadley’s Combat simulator
Personally, I have Revive equipped on every character. I suspect there are more economical solutions, but it gives me peace of mind that anyone can revive someone.
Increase Materia
Reraise allows a character to automatically revive themselves after being knocked out. It does cost 35MP to cast, so while it provides peace of mind, it’s definitely expensive. You can find Reraise Materia in these locations:
- Developed with Chadley from Meridian Ocean Intel*
- Developed with Chadley from Meridian Ocean
*You can earn data points in the Meridian Ocean once you have completed all Protorelic activities in other regions of the world.
Cleaning material
Starting with Poisona, which cures poison, Purification Materia levels up to grant Esuna, and finally resistance. The former cures all negative status effects while the latter gives you immunity to them. You can find cleaning materials at the following locations:
- Sold by most item and material vendors starting with chapter six
- Found during “Where The Wind Blows” Side quest in the grasslands
- Reward for “Junon Region Information: Level 2” in Chadley’s Battle Simulator
Chakra materia
Chakra is a command materia (yellow) and heals for a percentage of damage taken. It increases as the Materia gains more AP in battle, so: 20% of the damage taken, 25%, 30%, 35% and then 40%. Since it is a command materia, it is not found in spells, but rather in abilities. You can get chakra material from the following places:
- Tifa’s first Materia loadout
- Available in most Materia and Item Shops
- Reward for Crunch-Off at the Gym in Corel
- In the water grotto in Cosmo Canyon
- In the Temple of the Elders after the first gravity shift
Prayer material
The prayer heals all party members and costs no MP as it is a command materia. It can be increased five times over AP, with each level increasing the amount of healing dealt. Prayer materials can be found at the following locations:
- Available from Chapter 10 at most item and material stores
- Part of Aerith’s initial Materia loadout
- In a chest near Phenomenon Intel 4 in Gongaga
In the end, I left the Prayer Materia behind and instead linked the Magnify Materia with the Healing Materia. Cait Sith will have Magnify equipped when he joins your party. Otherwise, it can be found in the Northern Ridge area of Mt. Nibel and after completing the side quest “Victim of Circumstance” and “Brutal Challenge: Hellions’ Intonement” in Chadley’s combat scenario. It’s a pretty powerful materia that, in my opinion, is most effective when paired with restorative materia and those that improve status.
HP absorbent material
You must link this materia to an elemental spell. Once done, you can cast this spell and have its damage converted into healing. You can find HP Absorbent Material in the following locations:
- Develop with Chadley from Corel Region Intel (you can create a maximum of two spheres this way)
HP Up Materia
As a purple, full materia, HP Up does not heal you. However, it increases your HP from 10% in the early stages to 30% in the maximum. HP Up can be found at the following locations:
- Part of Yuffie’s starting equipment
- Available from most item and material vendors
- Reward for Combat Training: Beginner Hall in Chadley’s Combat Simulator
- In a boat on the shore of Under Junon
- Earn an A rank for a performance of “On Our Way” on piano
- In a corner of Event Square’s Golden Theater at the Gold Saucer
- In Dustbowl Bandit’s Bluff
- Reward for “Gongaga Region Information: Level 2” in Chadley’s Battle Simulator
You can stack HP Up Materia for a maximum of 30% additional. Note that HP Up already increases your HP by 30% when you level up completely. So stacking can be a quick fix at the start, but it’s more economical to level multiple instances of them and equip them with different characters (Barret is that). a good choice as it is an excellent tank).
While it’s helpful to think of Materia in terms of its color-coded categories, I found that I was most effective in combat when I thought about Materia’s broader functionality independent of the color coding. Regardless of how you approach Materia or how you spec certain characters, Materia inspires a type of RPG character spec tinkering that has clearly stood the test of time since its creation in 1997.
