away FFXIV Patch 6.3, Adventurer Plates, and Instant Portraits are out of beta, and you can see each character in a unique photo after loading into dungeons, trials, and other multiplayer content. However, the launch seems to be a bit buggy and it’s hard to say why problems arise.
After playing around with the new system outside of beta, we have an overview of how it works. However, keep in mind that although they helped us, these solutions may not be the panacea for you.
How do adventurer plates and portraits work?
Adventurer Plates are the little business cards of the warrior of light, with which you can display all the information you want. You can access and set them up by clicking the Character button and then selecting Adventurer Plate from the drop-down menu.
On the panel you can choose to show a snapshot of your character by selecting “Edit Portrait”. This snapshot will appear as your adventurer plate photo, even if you are not currently doing that job or wearing that armor.
For example, if my adventurer plate is a red mage wearing a raincoat, it will show up like this – even if I’m playing as a warrior or if my red mage is wearing a different outfit.
This is not to be confused with this portraits, which is available from the next drop-down option under Adventurer Plate. You can use these as “instant portraits” that your party members will see when creating multiplayer content.
However, for your instant portrait to work, You must wear the same gear in the portrait as in the content you are running, even if you were happy about the equipment. If you’ve changed gear, glamor or not, make sure you do so Save your portrait again before running any content or you will get the default mugshot portrait.
If you are playing the job depicted in your adventurer plate, the plate’s portrait, your instant portrait, and your current gear must wear the same gear or you will receive the standard mugshot. Furious.
If your gear doesn’t match, you should see a small error triangle next to the portrait, like this:
Why is my Instant Portrait not working?
The answer is that you probably have mismatched gear that you might not notice. The other answer is that portraits seem kinda buggy so you might just need to play around with them a bit to make them work.
Try the following to fix your problem:
- Retake and save your adventurer plate portrait. Then re-save the appropriate Job Instant Portrait for it.
- Make sure your gear set is updated. (The rotating arrows in your character menu should be greyed out if this is the case.) If this is not the case, refresh it and save your portraits again.
- If you last saved your portraits before updating to patch 6.3, save them again.
- This might sound silly, but check your gear very carefully between your adventurer plate portrait and your instant portrait. We had an unenchanted ring which gave us problems with ours, which we didn’t even know was enchanted in the portrait as it’s not part of our Glamor record. Yes.
You can test if your portrait works by going into any task unsynced. If you enter out of sync, you can skip the line, quickly jump in, and then (once you’ve checked your portrait) exit with no penalty.
If you have other problems and/or solutions, please feel free to leave them in the comments to help other warriors of light during these difficult times.
