Square Enix has released a free demo for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PlayStation 5 after showing the second part of its remake of the 1997 classic in one dedicated State of Play stream on Tuesday.
The demo consists of two parts, with the second part being added later in an update. The first part, available now, is almost the first full chapter of the game. Here you can play as hero Cloud and antagonist Sephiroth in an early flashback called “The Nibelheim Episode,” based on a memorable moment from the original game. It’s very dramatic and provides a brilliant starting point for Final Fantasy 7’s story.
The second part of the demo, which will be added leading up to the game’s release on February 29th, gives players a taste of combat and exploration in a more open environment, Junon, and ends with a boss fight in the fishing village of Under Junon. This second section lets you form a party of three with Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and Red XIII and experiment with character synergies as you hunt monsters across the world map before facing a boss. Polygon had the opportunity to play this section back in September, and it’s a good taste of most of it Rebirth
Unfortunately, the demo contains sections from all over the world RebirthProgress will not carry over to the full game once it releases on PS5 on February 29th.
Elsewhere in the State of Play, Square Enix offered an in-depth look RebirthThe game’s structure and features, including the often surreal and fun side quests and mini-games, will enrich what looks like a colorful and expansive adventure.
Polygon recently had the opportunity to play the opening hours of Rebirth. After this momentous first chapter, reminiscent of the Nibelheim Incident, the action shifted to the picturesque town of Kalm, where Cloud and his friends rest after the events Final Fantasy 7 Remake. There we were able to chat with the party and locals and explore some of the gaming systems, including a promising Gwent-like trading card game called Queen’s Blood. After escaping a Shinra raid on Kalm, the action shifted to the grasslands for open-ended exploration reminiscent of the Junon portion of the demo.
