Because Final Fantasy XIV somehow turned into one of the biggest video games in the world, Square Enix decided to grab it some of its older contents from the back of the refrigerator Place in the microwave and serve It’s aimed at a whole new audience of gamers who probably weren’t around when it first released.
I’m specifically talking about the second major expansion of the game, Stormbloodwhich was released as premium downloadable content six years ago, but will be made available for free for the next few weeks (assuming you already have a paid subscription, they don’t just give it free/playback).
Like the game website points out (Thanks, Eurogamer), the free offer runs until May 28th. Importantly, it’s not free to play, it’s free.downloadso, provided you get it before the deadline, you can play it whenever you want.
It is good for both console and pc version of the game, though, as this official FAQ shows

Final Fantasy XIV is one of the best massively multiplayer online RPGs out there, one of the few capable of sustaining a monthly subscription model in a day, albeit just one Elder Scrolls MMO must become free-to-play. Stormblood’s epic narrative, gorgeous new locations, spectacular battles, and some fresh gameplay mechanics make a difference great game even better.
I will never end it and nobody can force me to do it.
