A new Legend of Vox Machina The season three clip wasn’t the only Critical Role tidbit to emerge from Amazon Prime’s adult animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con—we also got a first look at the Mighty Nein series.
It’s a short animatic—a rough and unfinished clip—in which tiefling cleric Jester (Laura Bailey) runs away from a group of guards and then literally runs into the strong, mute half-orc Fjord (Travis Willingham). Cue shoujo anime-style roses sparkling in Jester’s line of vision before the guards catch up to her. (This is especially funny because Bailey and Willingham are married in real life.)
The show is obviously still in the early stages of development, but it is exciting to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the animation. It is a step up the ladder to bring the actual game interactions to life in an animated show and to see the characters in this form – nearly brought to life in a cartoon – is super cool. The Mighty Nein is the second Critical Role campaign and follows a different group of underdog heroes than The Legend of Vox Machina. There is no release date for the Mighty Nein show yet, but The Legend of Vox Machina returns in October.
