“Of course I have! Of course you are jokingly?” That’s how Sasha Calle reacted when he asked if that Flash actor had read Supergirl: tomorrow’s woman.
Calle’s performance as Kara Zor-El, the alien known as Supergirl, is a highlight of The Lightning. The 27-year-old relative newcomer brings Supergirl to the big screen for the first time since Helen Slater in Warner Bros. Independent in 1984 – focus is on bringing it. And as we know from James Gunn’s big DC Films announcement earlier this year, it won’t be the last we see a Supergirl on screen. Supergirl: tomorrow’s woman is a comic book series written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely, and is the source material for a Warner Bros. blockbuster currently in development.
“Supergirl: tomorrow’s woman is a very, very cool comic book,” gushed Calle. “Right from the start I’ve been a real fan.”
Calle likened the angry but compassionate Supergirl from The Lightning until the beginning woman of tomorrow, which begins with Supergirl hiring a spaceship to fly to a planet so far from any yellow sun that her superpowers begin to dwindle. Why? Because it’s her 21st birthday, and instead of spending it with friends or family, she wants to go to an alien bar to get drunk all by herself.
“She’s kind of jaded, kind of sad and trying to process her grief. And I really love that, man, because I think Supergirl is a complex superhero who also feels everything ten times deeper. Her joy, her sadness, her sorrow. She’s just trying to process it, like all of us.”
Calle doesn’t know if her role is in it The Lightning automatically introduces them to a role woman of tomorrow, but she would be over the moon if it were. And her emphatic enthusiasm made it clear that it wouldn’t just be the excitement of an old job, even across the distance of a video chat in a day of job interviews.
“If you’re a nerd like me, you know that [Supergirl] is several things. It’s joy, it’s love, it’s kindness,” Calle said. “I’m deeply in love with Supergirl. I love her so much. I have the greatest respect for her and feel very connected to her. I say that playing this character was in the stars for me. And I hope to be able to play them. I hope to see more of her.”
The Lightning hits theaters this Friday. Warner Bros. has not announced a release date Supergirl: tomorrow’s woman the movie, but you can buy the original book, which Polygon named as one of the best comics of 2022, at your local comic store or Digital Comics Retailer.
