Fourteen daysThe battle royale mode is so huge and popular in 2024 that most people forget about the game Strictly speaking started without. And Fourteen daysDonald Mustard’s former boss revealed in a recent interview that the popular mode was essentially developed in the back seat of a car on the way to a meeting.
In September 2023After 15 years at Epic, Mustard announced he was leaving to work on new projects. He had helped Epics grow Fourteen days in one of the biggest games in the world and brings numerous crossover characters and celebrities into the online shooter metaverse. During a recent chat with Game fileis Stephen TotiloMustard revealed a lot of information about how they brought Batman, John Wick and Superman into one game, the fight to grow Fourteen days while they were still participating in major events, and how they even decided to add a battle royale mode to the survival shooter.
In 2016, Mustard was promoted to Chief Creative Officer of Epic. This came at a time when the company was in a strange situation – distress sold War equipment and announced Fourteen days before the radio fell silent – and had to “shake something up”.
Minecraft, PUBG, and a random bus influenced Fourteen days
Mustard says he first noticed battle royales when they appeared Minecraft. Around 2017, Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds and its 100-player games became increasingly popular the biggest thing on Steam. Mustard says he remembers thinking it “felt like a really unique take on the question: How do you get a lot of people into something?” and just before the official launch of Fourteen daysDuring a road trip in mid-2017, Mustard and Epic decided the company needed its own battle royale.
“It was Tim Sweeney and Paul Meegan, the president of Epic at the time, [and] Kim Libreri, Epic CTO,” Mustard said. “The four of us were in the back of an Uber in California, on our way to a meeting at Disney… We were already toying with the topic [idea that] We have to do a battle royale. We should do that. And what if we did? Fourteen days?
“And so we decided on this car. We say: “We will do it, we will give the team new tasks, we will use it.” Fourteen dayswe’re going to do a battle royale.’”
At this point, Mustard realized they needed a design document in “about three hours,” so following the Uber account, he began writing a one-page document for what would end up being the result Fourteen daysis Battle Royale.
“A school bus passes us in traffic and I think: The players are going to be on a bus in the air and we’re going to jump out,” Mustard explained. In September 2017 Battle Royale started in Fourteen days and the rest is history.
When asked about the frequent criticism from many Fourteen days I just copied PUBG and using Battle Royale as a gimmick to make the new game more popular held Mustard back Game file:
“My philosophy is: In all video games, we cheat each other.” He added: “For me, this is just an evolution of Quake.”
I recommend reading the rest game file’s interview with Mustard to learn why Nintendo said no to a Metroid Crossover, how Epic brought Batman and Superman together in the same shooter, the story behind the black hole and even the former Fourteen days Boss is currently working on it.
