We don’t get much of it Car fighting games These days, and that’s a shame. I miss having fast-paced vehicular combat games on a regular basis where guns, explosions and high-speed car chases become an entertaining experience. You know, things like Twisted metal And Interstate 76. Well, fortunately fumes is coming and it’s set to be the retro car fighting game we all deserve.
fumes came to my attention earlier this week when one of the developers shared a video of it in action on Twitter. In doing so, they responded specifically to the most recent reports Sony had canceled one in development Twisted metal
fumes is an open world car combat game takes place in an endless wasteland filled with other survivors driving around in beat-up, rusty SUVs, jeeps, trucks and compact cars. All vehicles inside fumes contain large, cartoon-like weapons that pop out when needed, allowing you to aim other cars in any direction. Because the map is so open, you’ll almost always be driving at very high speeds. Since there are no obstacles in the wasteland, you can focus on enemy jeeps and trucks chasing you. Shoot them enough and they will explode, giving you scrap and parts to upgrade your own vehicle. Add bigger tires, more weapons, etc.
All in fumes feels nearly too fast and sloppy, but in a good, messy way. I always felt like I was in control of my car, but just barely. The fact that you’re barely in control gives the game’s action an excitingly frantic energy. I often felt like I was sliding around, desperately trying to avoid an enemy car with a spinning saw attached to the hood. Again, it’s not frustrating, just entertaining. You’re always trying to keep the tires low and move your car forward. Just driving around is fun, even without combat, which is good for a game set in such an open environment.
I particularly liked how even the enemy cars often spin out of control, slamming into rare rocks or throwing themselves over jumps as they endlessly try to blow up your vehicle. fumes is not a boring game at all. The rock music helps a lot too.
The game is currently being developed by a small team that is planning to release it fumes sometime in Early Access on PC. The demo already convinced me that this would be something special. I can’t wait to see this different environments and new content promised by the developers. I’m ready to blow up 100 more Jeeps with a big shotgun strapped to the hood of my rally car. I can barely wait for it.
fumes hasn’t been released yet and there is no launch window. It is currently scheduled to be released on PC via Steam. You can download the demo today.
