Well, well, look who’s coming to Gamescom 2023: Nintendo.
The publisher, who has opted for YouTube broadcasts over the past decade rather than formally attending the video game industry’s top trade shows, said on Wednesday that it will be appearing at Gamescom 2023 in Cologne this summer. The expo runs from August 23rd to 27th.
Nintendo’s marketing strategy since 2013 has reshaped the way everyone gets their game news, regardless of console. The company hasn’t done a live presentation on stage since E3 2012 — you know, the kind of glitzy extravagance that’s made former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime a household name. Since then, the company has instead aired a series of hugely popular Nintendo Direct shows whenever there was something to announce. And other publishers and platform owners have followed suit.
Even as Nintendo transitioned to its pre-recorded shows, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the traditional video game calendar, the company still maintained a booth on the show floor at major trade shows. However, last month the Electronic Software Association, which organized E3, finally canceled the show.
Gamescom, which is open to the general public as opposed to E3, is a very different show. The Nintendo exhibition in Cologne follows the launch of on July 21st Pikmin 4so it’s possible that the company will then have something to show that it hasn’t previously announced.
Gamescom is a gaming fair and expo that has been held in Germany since 2009. Last year, Gamescom’s Opening Night Livestream, hosted by Geoff Keighley, revealed launch dates, updates and other announcements for more than 30 games, including dead island 2, Hogwarts legacy, Gotham Knights, And Sonic Frontiers.
