Hollywood is doing live action Gantz Customization and, corresponding meeting, Julius Avery of Overlord Glory leading the project. Have you heard? Because Hiroya Oku, the manga artist who created Gantz, had not.
Okus Gantz Manga debuted in 2000 and ran in through 2013 Weekly young jump Magazine. It spawned an anime, a video game, a live-action Japanese film, and a CGI version.
As previously mentioned, meeting reports that Avery is set to direct; however, this has yet to be officially announced. In addition to Helming the horror movie Overlord, Avery also previously wrote and directed the 2014 crime film Son of a gun and is currently working on Samaritanbased on the graphic novel of the same name and starring Sylvester Stallone.
This report was news to Oku, der wrote on Twitterthat this was “the first thing he’d heard of”. (Note that Oku’s tweet also mentioned that Marc Guggenheim, who co-developed and wrote arrow, took care of the script. That’s something he was asked about last year, and he answered with a Shhh emoji.)
“I signed the contract beforehand [to make the live-action Hollywood movie], but I did not know that it was going forward. ” he added on twitter.
Online in Japan, some fans are thrilled with the report of Avery’s involvement, but others are a little worried that Oku doesn’t seem to be really involved in the production – or that he doesn’t even seem to know what’s going on with it.
