Meanwhile, fans of George RR Martin’s books Song of Ice and Fire – the novels have been adapted into the HBO Max series game of Thrones and house of the dragon – are used to receiving slightly tiring updates on his progress on the next novel in the series, which is 11 years overdue, The Winds of Winter. An episode of the Comedy Central series Stephen Colbert’s Tooning Out The News has the latest from Martin, who says – sounding rather sincere – that he’s written about 1,100 to 1,200 pages of the book so far and only has “another 400, 500 pages” to go.
In this exclusive clip from Martin’s episode of the show, which will air later The daily News on December 7 at 11:30 p.m. EST, animated host Dr. Ike Bloom (voiced by Inspector Ike‘s Ikechukwu Ufomadu) confronts Martin, calling him “a battle Writers – let me revise that, really pathetic — who has trouble meeting deadlines.” He calls the prolific crime writer James Patterson for advice on how Martin can get the job done faster.
Patterson first asks Martin how far his deadline is and seems surprised to hear how long the book has been delayed. He suspects that Martin has “writer’s constipation” and advises him to change his writing methods to continue using a DOS computer and the WordStar word processor: “Then try something else because it won’t work.”
Martin has frequently expressed that he is upset that fans and interviewers constantly nag him about his slow progress The Winds of Winter, who keeps getting sidelined while working on other HBO shows and projects. But here he seems to be at least trying to impose a sense of humor on the whole thing, with some awkward laughs while roasting. What he doesn’t address is why, as Patterson blithely suggests, he doesn’t break up winds of winter
Stephen Colbert’s Tooning Out The News is currently in its third season. Full episodes of the series are available on Paramount Plus, Hulu and on Comedy Central website.
