Do not get me wrong, Red Dead Redemption II and pistol is fun and all. I definitely enjoyed my time with them and I still play Red Dead Online. but Call of Jaurez: Gunslinger, perhaps a better cowboy game than either (and most of the others), is now available for free on Steam for a limited time. And if you’re into a good ol ‘cowboy shooter and / or unreliable storyteller, then you should pick it up meanwhile costs $ 0.

Don’t let that happen Call of Juarez Branding puts you off from trying this western shooter. While the rest of the series (to borrow a phrase as old as the Wild West itself) is a mixed bag, Gunslinger stands way above all of them with perhaps one of the best examples of an unreliable narrator in a video game. The game’s story is told through flashbacks told by an elderly gunslinger who often gets the facts wrong or changes things on the fly. So you could be fighting a bunch of Apache warriors if one of the people listening to the narrator remind him that he said cowboys attacked, So he changes his story and the game follows his example and also swaps enemies. It’s all done with a sleek, comic book-like style that still lasts nearly eight years after it was released in 2013.

Gunslinger is not too long either. This is easily a game most gamers can knock out on a single Sunday afternoon, which makes it perfect for squeezing in between some of the bigger open-world games that have been released in recent months. But while it may be short, it offers a lot of action in its compressed runtime, not to mention a full skill tree and some other nice mechanics. For example, you can sometimes dodge bullets. Sometimes you go up against bosses through a satisfactory dueling system.

Juarez’s reputation: Gunslingsr is currently free on Steam as part of the 30th anniversary of publisher and developer Techland. But the deal is for a limited time only. On December 14th, it rides into the sunset.

If you don’t want to shoot cowboys and ride stagecoaches but still want a free game in the past, stop by Year 1404, which is currently available for free through Ubisoft’s digital store. This is the revised version of the classic city kit, complete with fancy graphics and 4K monitor support. It’s also free until December 14th.
