Supergiant Games will soon select a handful of players to be the first to try it out Hades II. The highly anticipated sequel to The roguelike favorite of 2020 is at the top of many gamers’ wish lists, but not everyone will get the chance to try it out technical exam. To spread the love to fans who weren’t chosen, developer Supergiant hosted an impromptu project Live broadcast This gave the public a glimpse of what to expect and when Hades 2 finally enters early access. Here’s what we learned.
As revealed in the game’s original trailer, Hades 2 moves away from the original protagonist Zagreus and the familiar settings that players have battled through countless times. The sequel stars Zagreus’ sister Melinoë, the princess of the underworld. She fights her way through new biomes to defeat the Titan of Time, Chronos, as he wages a war against the Olympians. A fun twist on the original is that instead of escaping Hell, Melinoë appears to be trying to break in and reclaim her home. As mentioned during the stream, Hades 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, although it seems like it takes place much later, as Melinoë wasn’t even born in the first game and is now a young woman.
The first thing many viewers will notice is the similarity Hades 2 is to its predecessor. It’s still a roguelike, presented in an isometric perspective and populated with beautiful art. They once again have a home base called The Crossroads, which you will return to if they die. Here we see new characters such as Hecate, Nemesis and Odysseus. However, we also see some familiar favorites in the game’s base of operations, such as Hypnos, the god of sleep.
Throughout the stream we saw a lot of familiar mechanics like different weapons, attacks and special moves, although everything is slightly different to suit Melinoë. Instead of Zagreus’ Mirror of the nightFor example, in Melinoë there is the Altar of Ash, which players can use to improve certain skills. A new mechanic for Hades 2 is magic that appears as a second bar above Melinoë’s health bar. Magic allows Melinoë to unleash powerful Omega attacks, but it also adds a second resource for players to manage.
Two weapons were shown in the livestream, the Witch’s Staff and the Sister Blades. The former is good for keeping enemies at a distance, while the latter is perfect for dealing with enemies up close. Supergiant confirmed that these would be the only two weapons players would be able to use during technical testing. In addition to weapons, Hades brings back Blessings, the random powers granted by the Olympians. The livestream reintroduced some familiar faces, such as Poseidon, Aphrodite and Demeter. The gods all have new looks, all of which are much more suited to war than the look we see in the first game.
Of course, we also have to meet some new gods, and the livestream featured some new faces: Apollo (god of the sun), Hestia (goddess of fire), and Selene (a titan and goddess of the moon). Selene and all the new characters we’ve seen confirm this Hades 2 will be filled with just as many beauties as in the first game. Hestia has a placeholder portrait for now, although her voice acting gives us great characterization even without footage.
We even got a look at the final boss of the Erebus region during the live stream. It turns out that none other than Hecate, Melinoë’s mentor, serves as the de facto leader of The Crossroads. She’s not evil; Rather, she is testing Melinoë’s skills for the battle that awaits her. We know that the technical test will only include Erebus, and if players manage to defeat Hecate, they will be asked to stop playing and wait for Early Access. After losing the battle against Hecate, we get a surprising glimpse into the history of Hades 2 in the form of a flashback showing Melinoë as a little girl. It touches on one of the big questions many fans might have: Where is Zagreus in the sequel? We still don’t know, but you can look forward to finding out more when the game finally enters Early Access after technical testing is complete.
