To be a great animator like Hayao Miyazaki, you have to be able to notice things. The power of observation is the key to drawing. Masaaki Endothat was being worked on My neighbor Totoro as a major animator, he recently shared a story in which he explained how good Hayao Miyazaki was at picking up on small details.

Endo called back After submitting the key animation for Totoro, Miyazaki called him over and said, “Hey, the art is skewed. Your prescription for glasses is wrong, isn’t it? “

“I don’t think so,” replied Endo Miyazaki, adding, “I’ll have it checked out anyway.”

Not exactly convinced by Miyazaki’s armchair diagnosis, Endo went to the ophthalmologist. He had his eyes examined and lo and behold, Miyazaki was right: the eyesight in one of Endo’s eyes had deteriorated.

Having the prescription fixed in his glasses and returning to the studio, Miyazaki told he was right, who replied that apparently it was the problem.

After that, Endo continued, the distortion disappeared and there was no similar problem with the key animation. The animator realized that the eyes are so important that even a trivial thing can have a huge impact on the art.

This is undoubtedly a good finding, but more importantly, it just shows how attentive Miyazaki was – and is. This power of observation is of course expressed in his films and illustrations, but also in the way he brings his characters to life, be it in their walk, in their facial expressions or in the way they speak.

As an important animator, Endo has on one number of iconic Anime, including Castle in the sky, Akira, kiki’s delivery service, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. M.He’s been working on it recently Boruto: Naruto The Movie and Sword Art Online The Movie.
