It was very exciting to hear that in 2019 Homeworld 3 was in development. However, the news was tempered somewhat at the time by a very strange crowd– Funding program that was attached to the project, despite the fact that the game was funded by Gearbox, a major publisher.
It wasn’t a traditional crowd funding idea like Kickstarter, where backing money is easy wholly or largely intended to fund the development of the game. Instead, Gearbox and developers Blackbird Interactive used a platform called Fig, which instead of Asking fans for funding to make the game – Gearbox would always pay the bills – would give them the opportunity to contribute to the game’s development through suggestions and share in the profits made Homeworld 3 be a big hit.
The whole thing felt easy strangebut maybe this was only there for me over 8,400 fans eventually parted ways with cash and raised over $ 1.5 million. Most of the time, this money is never collected anymore, since Fig has informed the supporters that the whole project is now dead in the water.

As you may know, there have been changes to Gearbox lately. Due to these developments, Fig no longer collects investment reservations for Homeworld 3, and all investors who have made an investment reservation in Homeworld 3 will NOT let this investment move in. Rest assured that Fig never billed you for your investment reservation and that this will not affect Homeworld 3 pre-orders. In addition, the game and all associated rewards will continue to come to those who purchased it.
We know this will be a disappointment to some of you who have been waiting to invest in the success of this incredible game. Since partnering with Republic, we’ve changed the way we invest. Now we collect the money in advance and confirm the investments as soon as the campaign exceeds the minimum threshold agreed by the developer and fig. We currently have two options starting with one that uses legendary IPs like Homeworld for future remakes / remasters in an investment portfolio approach.

The two most important things to take away from this, of course, are that the game’s development isn’t affected – it has never been affected by fig money – and for some reason behind the scenes it looks like Gearbox sold to Embracer earlier this year (alluded to so easily “last changes at Gearbox “) is behind the Cancellation of the campaign.
