No matter how hard you try, you are bound to get hurt God of War Ragnarok. Although we have no solution to the emotional damage caused by the story, the Steinbjorn armor set can help with the physical toll. All three pieces of gear focus on providing an absurd amount of defense that is decent on its own. But the primary ability, which causes Kratos’ attacks to temporarily restore his health after he’s been badly injured, offers a promising perspective.
Get your hands on some of these God of War Ragnarok‘s best armor sets is pretty simple. However, the Steinbjörn armor requires you to defeat four trolls in order to collect them slumberstones, the material needed to craft the armor. Worry not, however, as this guide explains the preparation you need before you start hunting down each piece, as well as their locations and how to get the most out of the set.
Some preparation before you can get the Steinbjorn armor…
Before you dive into each place, here’s a quick list of everything you need to start this quest. Note that we will mention a few Light story spoilersSo, if you don’t want to spoil any surprises, wait until you’ve completed the main story mission, Forging Destiny.
At a glance, you need the following before you can use the Steinbjörn armor God of War Ragnarok:
- You have unlimited access to freely roam Midgard’s Lake of Nine area;
- Have the Draupnir Spear in your possession;
- Possess the “key” that Freya gives you in the main story to unlock the Forbidden Sands area of Alfheim;
- Complete the Song of the Sands favor in the Forbidden Sands.
The order doesn’t matter, but it’s worth knowing what’s needed ahead of time so you don’t waste time.
Where to find the mystical heirloom relic in God of War Ragnarök?
That Mystical heirloom relic inside God of War Ragnarok starts the mission to collect the Steinbjörn armor pieces. You can find the relic in the Lake of Nine, southwest of Tyr’s Temple. If you look at the map for reference, it’s near the rock-like structures on the ground.
As you get closer, you’ll notice a crack in the ice wall. Throw a spear and detonate it to open a path. Once you’ve attacked the enemies inside, grab the relic from the ground. You can now go in search of the armor parts.
God of War Ragnarok Troll Statue Locations – How to Collect Slumberstones
There are three locations for troll statues God of War Ragnarok, and you can visit them in any order. If you played in 2018 God of War, the fights will be quite familiar. Equip the relic and activate it once you’re in the right spot (L1 + Circle by default) to awaken the troll statue.
Location of the ruined outpost troll statue
There is a troll statue in the Abandoned Outpost, an area in the southwest corner of Midgard. Walk through the passage until you come across the ruins. There you will see the troll statue. Activate the relic to start the fight against the mini boss. Kratos’ ax isn’t the best choice for this, but either the blades or the spear will work just fine.
When you’re done, get the loot, including the first Slumberstone. Two more to go.
Location of the Forbidden Sands Troll Statue
Another troll statue awaits you in the Forbidden Sands, right next to the Barrens alfheim. Once you’re able to unlock the door – again thanks to Freya’s gift – tackle the Song of the Sands favor to clear the map, then head to the western corner. The spot is to the left of the center of the area, just past some debris. Hook onto the platform at the top to find the statue. Blades won’t fit well here, so either your ax or spear will do.
Grab the second Slumberstone and get ready for the final (and toughest!) fight.
Location of the troll statue in the Garden of Noatún
Not one, but two troll statues await you in Noatún’s Garden, an area on the eastern side of the river delta in Vanaheim. Here you can do the ghost a favor to clear the toxic clouds around you, making the encounter much easier. When you’re ready, use the relic again and fight the trolls. They each have an elemental resistance (fire and ice) so you can either use the spear or mix things up by switching between the Blades of Chaos or the Leviathan Axe as needed.
That will be all you need for the Snoozestones. Now go ahead and craft the armor in any forge.
God of War Ragnarök Steinbjorn armor stats, best build
Here are the stats and abilities associated with each piece of the Steinbjörn armor set:
Steinbjörn Plackart (chest protector)
- Be able: The Bloodthirsty Vengeance ability causes Kratos’ attacks to restore lost health for five seconds after taking “significant” damage – but in our experience, this happens fairly frequently at around 75% of his health bar and below.
Starting stats: Armor starts at Rank 6 with 123 Defense.
Steinbjörn gauntlets (wrist protection)
- Be able: The Stunning Retaliation I skill grants a moderate chance of luck to stagger and deal Stun damage to nearby enemies when taking damage.
Starting stats: Armor starts at rank 6 with 22 Strength and 55 Defense.
Steinbjorn Waistguard (Waistguard)
- Be able: The Stunning Retaliation I skill grants a moderate chance of luck to stagger and deal Stun damage to nearby enemies when taking damage.
Starting stats: Armor starts at Rank 6 with 77 Defense.
Bloodthirsty Retaliation is by far the most interesting ability of the bunch. In theory, Stunning Retaliation I should be a good companion, and to a certain extent it is. But since the primary ability focuses on restoring health, we’re going to capitalize on that as much as possible.
To establish the best Steinbjörn setup, we recommend wearing the Steinbjörn poster next to the Bracers of Raven’s Tears and Belt of Raven’s Tears. The latter two (obtained from hunting Odin’s Ravens) grant the Heal Effect II skill, which increases healing from Healthstones, Rage, and Equipment.
The nice thing about Raven’s Tears pieces is that their ability applies to rune attacks as well. Ideally, you should look for attacks that can withstand damage for a few seconds in order for the healing to last while Bloodthirsty Vengeance is active. If you still need health while doing this, expose yourself to another hit and continue the combo. Keep in mind that basic attacks still apply, but you’ll be better healed overall by rage or rune attacks.
Here are some rune attack suggestions for each weapon that work really well with this build:
- Wrath of the Frost Ancient: Ax Runic Light Attack – Creates a beam of ice that freezes enemies on contact.
- Nebula of Helheim: Ax Rune Heavy Attack – Creates an area attack that continuously inflicts Frost for a few seconds.
- Fog of Fimbulwinter: Ax Rune Heavy Attack – Creates a wave of ice that deals Frost damage to enemies in front of you.
- Flames of Fear: Blade Rune Light Attack – Creates a geyser of fire in front of you.
- Atlas eruption: Rune Heavy Attack for the Blades – works similar to Flames of Anguish, but focuses on melee attacks instead.
- Artillery of the Ancients: Spear Heavy Rune Attack – Creates a rain of spears in an area in front of you.
There are a few different options to choose from, and as always, it’s best if you actually upgrade the rune attacks to increase their duration, area of effect, or both. And remember, a hunter is a hunter, even in the Norse realms.
