First introduced in Mortal Kombat 11This single-player mode – in which you must complete various objectives and challenges and fight against AI characters to unlock perks, cosmetics and Koins – works differently Mortal Kombat 1and the game doesn’t do a particularly good job of explaining the nuances. Below I’ve simplified how this new mode works and why you should try it.

What are Towers of Time?

The new Towers of Time mode in Mortal Kombat 1 is a mixture of its predecessor MK11 Iteration and the Gateway Portal Mesa in MK1‘s Invasions. They vary in difficulty and usually have different modifiers, with half of them rotating every hour. You use the same fighters you built in Invasion mode. So make sure you brush up on your elemental perks and equip your best relics.

Your main reason for playing this game is to grab rewards and the new Towers of Time challenges. They can be a great way to level up in both this and Invasion mode if you can defeat the higher level enemies.

The towers are divided into three rows:

  • At the front are the three longest-lasting towers. On the left is the new Legacy Tower, which offers character palettes from previous seasons as rewards. There is an arcade tower in the middle to unlock fighter endings. Finally, there’s the returning Season Tower, which offers exclusive character palette rewards based on the current season. A key change for Season Tower is that it now consists of seven battles instead of ten, and you can retry the current battle instead of having to start over.
  • The middle row consists of six timed towers. These rotate every hour, but every ten minutes. The level of difficulty also increases from left to right.
  • In the background are towers designed to promote live service content such as events or holidays. At the start of the Chaos reigns Update there is a tower for each new fighter: Cyrax, Sector and Noob Saibot. If they do this again for the rest DLC fightersThis is a great way for players to try them out before purchasing.

How to see Towers of Time rewards

In Mortal Kombat 11you can see each tower’s rewards as you scroll past them. This was beneficial if you wanted gear for a specific character and knew which to prioritize. Mortal Kombat 1 doesn’t work quite the same way.

Clicking on L1 or LB (depending on your controller) while hovering over the Season and Live Service towers will reveal which rewards you can win. There’s no telling if future live service towers will work the same way as the current character preview towers, but we can assume this will be the case for now. The hourly towers in the middle have no rewards, although in my experience they are just various consumables and not pallets.

What are Towers of Time Challenges?

For those who want more reason to grind, Towers of Time offers mode-specific challenges. Enter the pause menu to view the challenges on the left, divided into Easy, Hard and Weekly. On the right is a ranking system with points, which I’ll get to in a moment.

  • Simple challenges rotate every hour, but once completed, a new one can be generated immediately. Completing them will reward you with three points and either a consumable, crafting component, or relic.
  • Hard challenges change every day, but you can also generate another one after completing them. These reward you with seven points and a similar item type to Easy Challenges.
  • Weekly Challenges change every week. The main differences are that they can only be completed once per week and their reward is 50 points and Dragon Crystals.

While you may just want to aim for the premium currency Dragon Crystals, it may be worth getting those out for the points too. Similar to Kombat League, you are ranked based on the number of points you earn. Your rank will naturally decrease as more players collect points. That means if you want the highest rewards that require a top 10 percent or top 5 percent ranking, you’ll need to keep grinding before the two-week timer runs out.

A future update will also add points for the different towers themselves, rather than just challenges. This should make climbing the rankings a little less monotonous, but for now it’s best to focus on the challenges.

If you’re not a fan of the hustle and bustle of these games, this mode may not be for you. Other than that, I feel it Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reign“Towers of Time” is less strenuous than the previous version. Checking rank rewards every two weeks is more convenient than finding out on social media that you only have a few hours to unlock a rare skin.

Keep in mind that playing through Invasion mode will go a long way toward improving your characters’ stats for the tougher battles. If you keep attacking these towers, you’ll get tons of great cosmetics that will look great while brutalizing your opponents.
