As with any other MMORPG, Final Fantasy 14 has raids. These boss fights for eight players are divided by difficulty level, with normal raids These are the versions you can unlock for loot and story, and wild raids are the ones that drop the best gear and mounts in the slot.
Below we explain how normal raids work, where to unlock each normal (and wild) raid FFXIVand where to exchange loot for each raid series.
FFXIV: Normal Raids and Normal Raid Roulette, Explained
Normal raids are Boss battles for eight players which usually fit into a larger storyline in each expansion. There are usually 12 battles per raid series released over the course of a single expansion; each of the three patches of an expansion contains four battles.
Normal raids usually reward unique gear that is close to the best gear at the time of launch, and the Savage difficulty versions of these battles (usually called Savage Raids) drop the best gear for the time. Savage Raids are usually referred to as The Endgame content – with the ultimate raids being even more difficult content that only the top percentage of players can complete, but that’s almost something else entirely.
If the equipment becomes outdated after a few patches, it can effectively only be used as a glamour item.
Instead of receiving armor pieces directly, you receive certain drops that can be exchanged for equipment. The normal drops are traded at the following price:
- 2 lenses/helmets for head protection
- 4 shafts/armor for body protection
- 2 cranks/gauntlets for hand armor
- 4 feathers/leg warmers for leg armor
- 2 pedals/greaves as foot armor
- 1 stud/bracelet per accessory
The newest raid series may have restrictions on raid drops, meaning you can only claim one drop from each battle in that series per week. Completing the final battle in each tier of wild raids will also reward you with a special mount.
Unlocking at least two raids from any series (except “The Coils of Bahamut”) unlocks normal raid roulettethat gives you EXP and other goodies when you join a random normal raid in exchange for logging in.
As is usual with post-game content, you will need to complete most or all of the story of the base game or expansion to unlock it. For example, to complete the Omega Raids in Stormbloodyou must complete the main scenario quest “Stormblood”.
