There is likely an overlap between the 18 million people who subscribe to Game Pass and the many millions or not millions of people who are interested Outriders become choose now to play the game on Xbox. Still, it’s a multiplatform and multiplayer game. You can create squads of up to three players via drop-in, drop-out co-op, and cross-play is planned be a main component. How well is it currently working?
Not great in my experience!
I played that Outriders Demo on PlayStation 5. Last night, I convinced two of my friends – one on an Xbox Series X and one on a PC that is set up to run Cyberpunk 2077
in the OutridersCrossplay is not activated by default. First you need to open the game’s options to activate it manually. (The corresponding switch is located at the very bottom of the “Game Options” submenu.) From there, click on the “Play with Friends” option in the lobby. When you click Generate Code, an eight-digit alphanumeric code is generated. Your friends will be able to enter this code after clicking “Enter a game with code”. One loading screen later and you’re all synced.
This is how it works on paper. At first, our crossplay party consisted of me and my boyfriend on Xbox. I got into his game without any problems. Even outside of the occasional stutter, it played fluently enough. We had another petty hiccup where I wore a helmet in his game even though I had my helmet off because OutridersSorry, I have some seriously ugly helmets. (It turns out my friend just had to turn off the helmets.) We only parted once during one run of the demo, an event that was described to me as, “You just run like an idiot against that wall.”

The problems really started when we tried to put in a third player with a third platform. When my PC friend tried to log in, I was booted from the session. He didn’t end up in a meeting either. We tried a second time. I ended up in the session with no problems. However, my friend who is playing the pc was unable to connect. Steam apparently crashed immediately afterwards. A third attempt actually ended up with all of us in the game, but halfway through a side quest I noticed the PC gamer running into a wall like an idiot.
Then we lost the connection completely.
Personally, the cross-platform functionality is one of the gameplay features that are common today and one that amazes with wide eyes every time I experience it. For such a long time, video games have segregated the player base by platform. My friends and I could own the same game, but we couldn’t play together, which was total crap. So something as simple as playing Spell break
Again the crossplay function for Outriders is still in beta. And for the fleeting moments when it worked, it’s super cool indeed. It’s one thing to storm a room with three people all playing in the same ecosystem, firing weapons and powers, and reviving each other if necessary. But just knowing we were on different platforms gave me a separate appreciation for what was going on. Maybe I only have a basement bar for excitement, but my eyes always light up a bit when I see games – especially games that are as solid as Outriders– Lower this barrier to cooperative play.
