Robert Pattinson loves playing oddballs, so it’s no surprise that he jumped at the chance to play more than a dozen such characters in his new film. Mickey 17. The first trailer for the sci-fi comedy by parasiteBong Joon-ho arrived on Tuesday and it is every bit as weird, funny, and cruel as we hoped.
The film is set in the future, when humanity has made long journeys into space. But space is a dangerous place for normal people. Enter Pattinson’s character Mickey Barnes, a man who is repeatedly cloned and sent on horrific, life-threatening missions that no normal person would undertake. The trailer gives us only a taste of these missions and the variety of horrific ways Mickey dies, but each one seems stranger and funnier than the last. This continues in an endless cycle for Mickey until one day, two of his clones simultaneously find out they are alive – something that should never have happened.
The trailer is more vague on the details of what happens next, but it’s nice to have a bit of mystery. And when the people behind that mystery are one of the best filmmakers alive and an actor with a knack for interesting projects, it’s pretty easy to trust them, especially when the first trailer is so strange and entertaining.
Mickey 17 will be released in theaters on January 17, 2025.
