Interstellar returns to IMAX for the sci-fi film’s 10th anniversary on December 6th. Normally this would be a time for fans of the impressive space epic and its director Christopher Nolan to celebrate. Finally a chance to see again all 64 minutes of these magnificent 70mm images of black holes and planetary tsunamis on a giant screen. Unfortunately, it’s all about the how Interstellar IMAX Return has launched and has fans disappointed and angry.
The confusion started when tickets were available should be available for pre-order on November 7th But there was little warning for fans to prepare. Then, instead of seeing them all at once, some moviegoers were able to attend them at the theater earlier AMC app
The confusing purchasing process was complicated by the fact that few IMAX theaters actually have screenings Interstellar next month, and even then it will only last a week. Show times begin on December 6th and only run until the following Friday, December 13th. And performances only take place in the following eight theaters, spread across just six states:
- Dallas, TX – Cinemark Dallas & IMAX
- Fort Lauderdale, FL – AutoNation IMAX, Museum of Discovery & Science
- Indianapolis, IN – IMAX, Indiana State Museum
- Irvine, California – Regal Edwards Irvine Spectrum & IMAX
- New York, NY – AMC Lincoln Square 13 & IMAX
- San Francisco, CA – AMC Metreon 16 & IMAX
- Tempe, AZ – Harkins Arizona Mills 25 & IMAX
- Universal City, CA – Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood & IMAX
Even if you live near one of the theaters, you can get almost all tickets are already sold out within 24 hours to become available. It’s possible that more theaters will offer IMAX screenings in the coming weeks. Since the demand is so high, it will compete with other blockbusters like Moana 2 (due November 27th), and as more dates are added, Sonic3 (published December 20). At least one theater, Autonation in Fort Lauderdale, has announced
“There has been no screening like it,” wrote one disappointed fan on the IMAX subreddit. “Not even Nashville, which surprised me. I’ve been waiting for this all year. This film has been considered my favorite film for ten years and I always regret not seeing it in IMAX when it was first released.”
Even those who managed to get tickets now have to travel hundreds of kilometers to make it work. A person booked a whole trip from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale, 200 miles away, accommodation included. Others are Travel time up to eight hours to find the nearest IMAX showing. Is that practical? In the words of Interstallars Protagonist Cooper: “No. It’s necessary.”
Hopefully the theaters will decide that it is necessary to bring something Interstellar back to IMAX at a different time in more places. For now, everyone else will have to make do with regular screenings later in December.
