I don’t know much about them gundam franchise apart from a few reminders of the older shows when they aired on Toonami back then. Young Zack liked the big mech fights. And in 2022, I still like big mechs. I also like team-based shooters. So much luck, Gundam Evolution shuffles the famous mechs from the gundam franchise with gameplay very similar to Blizzard’s popular hero shooter, over watch. The end result is a lot of fun, but also a bit unbalanced.
Released on Steam last week, Gundam Evolution is a new free-to-play first-person shooter in the popular anime universe with a wide variety of legendary mechs from the series. Each of these mechs has their own weapons, abilities, and supers. These powerful super attacks are unlocked throughout gameplay as you kill enemies and complete objectives. If that sounds like a lot over watch, wait until you see the HUD and in-game graphics. But hey, if you want to copy another game, over watch is not a bad choice. and Gundam Evolution is more than just an anime reskin of Blizzard’s team shooter.
That’s one of the biggest differences Gundam Evolution features a “Down But Not Out” system ala war implements or battlefield. So if you go down you can ask someone to revive you and anyone on your team can bring you back to life. However, anyone on the other team can (and probably will) blast you open with a laser rifle and force you to respawn. This wrinkle makes big teamfights feel different than in over watch, As a single player, running and returning to revive a few people very quickly can turn a successful rush into a terrible failure.
While the revive system changes things up a bit, anyone who’s played a lot can over watch will probably feel comfortable stepping into this evolution. Many of the controls and even the in-game UI feel straight out ripped out over watch. However, what is missing is Overwatch’s balance and polish.

Gundam Evolution it’s not broken or anything. In my few hours with the game, things went well and I was able to quickly find matches with little to no lag. But the matchmaking is not very balanced. Almost every match I’ve played has been a complete blowout. Either our team would stomp the other team within minutes, or the opposite would happen. And that would cause players to get frustrated and leave, making matters worse. It’s a shame, because the few games I played with balanced teams were really fun. The fight has a bite to it evolution which I enjoy very much. They both feel like a big, powerful mech, but also feel fast and precise. It’s nice. But it’s hard to enjoy when the game keeps throwing me and others into one-sided battles.

If some of the matchmaking issues can be resolved and some of the more powerful mechs nerfed a bit to keep them from controlling matches so much, Gundam Evolution could be something special. As someone with basically zero interest or knowledge of the franchise, I still had a lot of fun playing it evolution. And I imagine that megafans of the series will enjoy this new shooter as much, if not more, than I do. thanks to her story with gundam. But until things are a bit more balanced and consistently fun, it’s hard to recommend people check it out evolution unless they don’t mind mild frustration and terrible games.
Gundam Evolution is now available on Steam. It plans to release on consoles later this year.
