Even before the age of Covid-19, disease masks were widespread in Japan especially during the hay fever season. But now that people wear them every day all day, there seems to be some idea of what good and bad mask manners are.
On Asashi TV this week Morning show (over Afternoon news) there was a segment on mask manners for work. These “rules” are aimed at business people and are at odds with the creative DIY masks that people in Japan have shown online.
The following guidelines were compiled by Mariko Suzuki, who specializes in manners, especially in corporate environments, after appearing to have spoken to people in work environments. If you’ve been to a bookstore in Japan, you’ve seen how many books there are on business manners. If you’ve been to the country beforeYou’ve probably seen it firsthand.
Japanese bUsiness manners can get pretty complicated with rules about who should be where in elevators or where different employees should sit in the same taxi.

Depending on the segment, the following good and bad mask manners are at work:
- Light pink masks: Good
- Dark pink masks: bad
- Black masks with white shirts: Bad
- Black masks with dark suits: Good
- Masks with pictures or patterns: Bad
- Masks with company logos: Good
A large part of the so unnecessary reasons was that in a work environment the goal is not to draw attention to the mask. At the beginning of the segment, the host said that white masks were the best – probably because they are the most common and therefore would attract the least amount of attention.
Even during the segment there were setbacks from panelists, things like “Who cares?” “Wearing a mask is important and good manners” or “What good manners don’t get [covid-19] or give it to others ”.
Online there was even more pushback 2ch Commentators who don’t have this:
“All is well.”
“That’s damn stupid.”
“I can’t understand a single one of them.”
“Because of these people, society is suffocating.”
“This lot is completely unnecessary.”
“Is this the point of these types of teachers in making society rougher?”
“I just want people to stop sticking that nose out of masks and wearing it on their chins.”
Adding rules to the types of masks that are okay and the types that don’t really work makes a difficult time even more difficult – especially if there are those protesting masks.
Wearing masks is good behavior. Period no?
