One of the most famous slasher franchises returns, but without its iconic killer. Friday the 13th gets a prequel series at Peacock written and screened by Bryan Fuller crystal lake.
The series will take place sometime before the first film, but will not feature Jason or his signature hockey mask thanks to the ongoing legal battle surrounding the franchise. Essentially, thanks to some weird contracts and some very lengthy court cases, the rights to the series are split between two different people, one who owns the first film and another who owns the sequels.
but Scream‘s Ghostface wants us to remember that Jason wasn’t the killer in the first film – his mother was. So while we could certainly get a Mrs. Voorhees in the prequel series, don’t expect Jason to show up or kill himself. Apart from that, the idea of a summer camp, which is often pursued by murderers of such Voorhees One or the other variety is probably still pretty fertile ground for a horror series.
Friday the 13th is by no means the first slasher series to also have its own spinoff series. In the early 2010s, there were also spinoff and prequel series for Scream, Psychoand even Bryan Fuller’s own Hannibal. Perhaps even more surprisingly, the series themselves mostly ranged from good to great, which makes this new project at least exciting. In fact, there was even another one Friday the 13th show called Friday the 13th: The Serieswhich aired in the late 80’s and has since been more or less forgotten.
Fuller is a television veteran who has created several shows over the past 20 years, including dead like me, Star Trek: Discovery, American godsand the above Hannibal. Also at the back crystal lake will be A24 which, while known for movies, is also the studio behind HBO euphoria. There’s no word on when yet crystal lake might come out, but it’s probably more than a year away.
