As Sega called 2024 Year of Shadow the Hedgehog, the company really wasn’t kidding. Now it looks like beloved actor Keanu Reeves could be the voice of Sonic’s rival in the film Sonic3 Movie. The casting was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, citing several anonymous sources.
Paramount is about to release Sonic3 on December 20, 2024. Fans always knew that Shadow would appear in the coming year Sonic3 Movie. The post-credits teaser in Sonic2 took a quick look at him, but Sega hasn’t officially revealed who will be playing him on screen.
If the news of Reeves’ involvement is true, it will come as a bit of a shock, but he has maintained a steady work pace of late. He continues to play the role of John Wick in the series of the same name. John Wick: Chapter 4 came out in 2023 and definitely relies on the actor’s talent for action, but Reeves seems to have had a good time. He played Johnny Silverhand in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 and also appeared as himself in the CGI film SpongeBob. Fans will have to wait and see how he will voice the brooding Sonic character.
The Sonic live-action casting continues to bring the best from the video game and cinema worlds. Hollywood stars like Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey have given characters like Sonic and Dr. Breathed new life into Robotnik. However, die-hard fans of the game and the animated series can enjoy performances like that of Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who starred in “Tails.” Sonic2 and previous Sonic media such as games and animated series.
The news comes shortly before the arrival of ankle, Paramount’s live-action spinoff starring the iconic echidna. Idris Elba, who plays Knuckles Sonic2, will reprise his role in the six-part series later this month. So if this potential casting has you wanting more live-action Sonic content, know this ankle will stream exclusively on Paramount Plus starting April 26th.
