The latest Planet of the Apes trilogy is one of the most enduring and thoughtful blockbuster revivals in recent memory. Start off low key with Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 film Planet Of The Apes: Prevolution, When did the series start? The Batman Director Matt Reeves took over the baton for 2014 dusk of the planet of the apes and 2017 War for the Planet of the Apes with an understated approach to post-apocalyptic action that never lost sight of humanity in its story about a burgeoning ape society.
It turns out her story isn’t over yet: kingdom of the planet of the Apes, “A brand new chapter in the ‘Planet of the Apes’ saga” will go into production next month. According to 20th Century Studios, the story will continue for many years after its conclusion War for the Planet of the Apesbut further plot details are not yet revealed.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will Owen Teague (It), Freya Alan (The Witcher) and Peter Macon (The Orville), and it’s being directed by Wes Bell (known for the Maze Runner films, but also the sadly canned animated adaptation of mouse protection). While this seems like a changing of the guard, two of the screenwriters – Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver – worked on the first two films, and they are joined by Josh Friedman and Patrick Aison (the latter wrote the excellent one prey).
Unfortunately, it doesn’t mention the one thing that helped make the new Apes trilogy such a success: Weta Digital’s work bringing the apes to life, including a great performance by Andy Serkis as the monkey guide Caesar. That’s not to say the film can’t do well with a different crew and cast, it’s simply the biggest footsteps to fill, the sort of things that will help or hinder the storytelling ambitions of a film like this .
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently scheduled to premiere in 2024.
