I had seen screenshots of Trombone Champ Earlier this week and thought it would be some sort of Wii music I completely overlooked the meme. Now that I know it’s its own game, I am very I’m glad I had the opportunity to check it out.
Developed by Holy Wow, Trombone Champ is currently available on Steam, although a Mac version is on the way as well. It’s a rhythm game where you play a trombone and have to move your mouse (and press a key) to match the music being played.
It’s relatively easy for a rhythm game, though Trombone Champ
The game’s launch trailer explains pretty much everything about it:
What’s important here is that while the game is funny – and from its loot box parodies to animation to excessive use of the word “toot”, it’s funny for all ages, a rarity – but it’s also… quite Well?

Many modern rhythm games try hard to be more complex, faster, and really do something New To table. but Trombone Champ just want you to move a mouse up and down the screen very quickly while holding down the left button (or smash the keyboard, which is easier and also fun since you can smash any letter key in the game).
That’s it! I’ve played this game before, from Ouendan to Donkey Kongaand that’s what this whole thing reminds me of the most, from the utterly frivolous premise to the absurdity of smashing through a piece of beautiful classical music with the most obnoxious sounds imaginable.
That’s okay because of this system is working, it’s solid and it’s fun. The appeal here doesn’t necessarily come from the gameplay itself, but rather from the ever-running joke that you play these songs with a fuck tromboneand that the Mii-like characters are some of the funniest avatars I’ve ever seen in a video game.
While the game is currently available on Steam and coming to Mac, in terms of console versions, the developers say that “more ports are possible but not planned at this time”.
